Was just at grocery store (on Sunday nonetheless) and my wife said "grab some grapes" So I walked over and said "Green or Red..... OR COTTON CANDY!?!?!?! Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa?!"

They are a little on the sweet side to down a whole ton of them at once, but god damn, they are juicy and delicious and freakishly taste JUST like cotton candy.

Most reports on the interweb say they just taste like really sweet grapes. Which doesn't sound like something I'd enjoy. Grapes should be a little tangy.

I beg to differ -- they tasted EXACTLY like cotton candy. (yes they were super sweet, but there was a distinct cotton candy flavor to them)

^^^This. They're ok, but the cotton candy taste is pretty abstract. It requires imagination. They're good, but I wouldn't pay a premium for them.

It's not enough to bastardize our manufactured foods, we also now need to breed our fruit for maximum sugar-y-ness.

Kroger down here in suburbs of Texas has been carrying them for a year or so. First, they're expensive as hell compared to regular grapes. Second, they're okay.

Now I am interested in this (OP's hearty approval). I see Kroger has them... I shall investigate today after work.

Well we've finally done it. Debauched even the humble grape with GMO evil genius sciencey goodness. GMO grapes I see nothing wrong with that.

What's the worst that could happen? You grow a cotton tumor in your brain? First of all it's cotton, so it's benign. Second it's cotton, so it'll soak up all that alcohol and benzos you been using to pickle your brain with.

Yup, I've seen them here at HEB as well.

I am eating some right now, got them over the weekend. They are basically super-sweet grapes. Most people love them, but some people don't like them because they're not super tangy or grapey, more sugary than anything. Also cost like double of what they charge for regular grapes.

But they are really, really good! If you like sugar & fruit, do yourself a favor & buy a bag.

I'd try them but that's about it. I bet they're ridiculously sugary.

They are very sugary, and they have almost a honeydew aftertaste. Pretty good, but you have to like sugar to really enjoy them because they are extremely sweet.

I agree. Maybe a small premium but not like double like what some stores are charging. I didn't really taste the cotton candy flavor, it was more sugary with a melon aftertaste than anything. We mixed them with tangy purple grapes yesterday at dinner & it worked out pretty good since you got the sweet & tangy combination.

Given that cotton candy is just colored melted sugar (seriously, it's just melted sugar) all they have to taste like is sugar.

Related, have any of you guys had a grapple? It's an apple that tastes like a grape. Pretty damn good. They're a little smaller than most apples and pretty sweet, but they're good.

The thing that makes cotton candy interesting is not the flavor (which is literally just sugar), it's the texture. Having a grape taste like cotton candy is like giving a grape the texture (but not the flavor) of bacon. It completely misses the point of why we like that food in the first place.

And I have had a grapple; those things are really bizarre. They smell like a grape popsicle, but in apple form. If that's the future of GMOs, I'm jumping off this train.

Per their website, and the logo itself, there's no GMOs going on here.
Though, the place I buy Chinese food from says "No MSG" either....:whiste:

They actually do taste like cotton candy. It's very odd- you can only eat so many of them though. I love trying new fruits :)

Our local Kroger somehow got a stock of cherimoya in. That was one of the best tasting fruits I've ever eaten. It almost reminded me of Hawaiian Punch- very sweet banana, citrus, mango type of flavor with a banana-like flesh. Strange looking thing too.

So, if you ever see these things in stores, BUY THEM IMMEDIATELY!

Yeah, my bag says "Sustainably grown, non-GMO". From their website:

Q: Are your grapes Genetically Modified (GMO)?

A: No. We work hard to breed our grapes naturally over time and to develop innovative, sustainable farming techniques that create exceptional and amazing flavor. Our all-natural best practices ensure a unique taste experience without the need for additives, infusions, or GMO. So when you try our grapes, you'll always enjoy a distinctive, delicious flavor. Nothing more. Nothing less. It's in our nature.

It's amazing how many fruits are out there that we just aren't exposed to in America. I always bring my first box of fresh dates into work for distribution...people are blown away with how good & soft they are. Date-flavored, honey-flavored, sugar-flavored, and caramel-flavored varieties, all fresh off the tree. None of this dried, cubed, powdered-sugar-coated garbage found at the bottom of trail mixes!

On a side note, as far as combination fruits go, I haven't seen apple/asian pears around in Meijer or Walmart for months. Now this is a quality fruit, and that's coming from a fruit connoisseur. I guess they're a winter thing? I guess that's roughly the last time I saw them in stock, and it was the first time I bought them so I wasn't aware of a season for them.

Nashis! Yeah, we only get them seasonally. Tastes like a mild apple, but soft like a pear. Apple pears!
