I have both membership. But I go to CostCo more often because it is closer. But I found Sam's carries more items and less crowded. Both have pharmacy, optical stores, tire shop, and pizza. One employee at Sam's said they will have a gas station within a couple of years.

I got a Discover just so that I could use it at Costco. I didn't like the fact they switched to Amex at first either, but since the Amex they offer through Costco has no annual free and is 2% cash back just like Discover, I just signed up for the Amex. Also the Amex they offer does not have to be paid off every month. Of course a lot of Amex plans now don't have to be paid off every month
Ya, I now have the costco amex card too. Now they even made it so you can't use other cards at the gas station (debit or Amex only).

I went over to the Sam's Club near work for lunch and it's not half bad. A chili dog and drink was almost $3 (not the $1.50 for a dog at costco), but they had Lakers shirts for $7 and gas. Costco still has better stuff, though.

They just built a new Sam's Club by me to replace the very very old one that was falling apart. I stopped by this weekend to look around and couldn't beleive my eyes. The ENTIRE parking lot was full. Inside they had all 28 registers open with lines at least 10 people deep in each. I couldn't beleive it.

We don't have any CostCo's here but we have a BJ's right across from Sam's which had about 10 cars in the parking lot :( So much for their business now.
