COSTCO RETURN POLICY

Then eventually no one will buy from Costco anymore. Who would like to buy something from Costco that may be a returned item? AFAIK COstco does not specify anything they sell is opened box item or returned item. And I don't think this is a great idea when there are bunches of people who will abuse it.

I purchased 12+ Princeton (pre-Sylvania) monitors and at least that many Epson printers from Costco last year when I opened my tech store. I've returned three of each. That'sbetter than a 20% failure rate - 50% higher than merch I order from online vendors.

I submit that Costco's liberal return policy serves them as well as the general public. Needless to say, I don't buy much (peripherals) from Costco any longer.

I bought a 30GB Maxtor at Costco and after 5months it developed bad sectors, took it back got a full refund and bought a 40GB from them-the price had gone down close to what I paid for the 30GB drive. Gotta luv Costco. 🙂

As far as dead plants go, walmarts has a one year guarantee on their plants. If it dies within a year you have to bring in your receipt and the dead plant and you get a refund. I know this for sure because i bought 6 houseplants a week ago and asked about the policy and it's for one year.

This is a great invitation to the many dishonest people out there who will totally abuse this policy. If you had a legitimate return, then you would be able to find out about their policy. All this does is promote bad habits by the people who are on a constant lookout on how they can benefit themselves any way they can.

I agree with mandms7 on this.

And sure, it's in PC magazine (advertisement booklet in disguise). But I wouldn't have been aware of it until I saw this post. Which would be fine if it weren't for the obvious fact that there's a lot of cheapos that visit here who wouldn't mind (a better word might be 'enjoy') abusing the policy at the expense of others.

they also have great policies for tires, and cheap installation too, you get prorated on tire returns if it is at least 2/32 left of thread

This has been going on for some time. I had a manager 4 years ago tell me that he didn't buy new computers, he just returned his computer every few years to Costco, got a refund and picked up a new one.

How you can live with yourself and do this, I don't know.

I don't think so,
dishonest people may not want to spend $45 on the membership fee to play this game,
they may just take $1.5 hotdog+soda deal (some costso's foodcourts are outside of the warehouse, the foodcourts don't check member card).
costco only has few computer, electronic, tech stuff selections,
they may not be interested in.

As a former Costco Employee, I'll clear it all up.

YES: Costco will take back ANY purchase, so long as it is intact, with all peripherals, manuals, bones (yes, they will take back food), wrapppings,

AND (the kicker)

Accompanied by the original receipt. Because receipts are marked leaving the building, they know that it was indeed a purchase. If you try bringing something back without a marked receipt, your membership is automatically revoked, and you are escorted from the building...🙂

Anyways, becasue Costco purchases directly form the manufacturer, they receive 100% value for the product, regardless fo condition, date etc. Sometimes they would open the RTV cage for us floor-sales guys, and we would basically take stuff piecemeal (ie drives, procs, cards etc). BUT, if soemthing looks entirely suspicious ie a 99% eaten cake, they MIGHT refuse it. (I've seen a steak returned that was nothing but fat and bone, the member said it tasted weird...🙂

So anyways, yes, they will take anything in perpetuity, as long as you have the receipt...

dental boy, what does it mean 2/32? i don't know much thing about car. by the way, I know Costco is pretty good at for buying new tire, get installed cos they never cost me headache at all when it comes to auto care. I wish they have oil change service so i can just drop the car there while i shop and taste food there. 😛

Yes, buying tires from costco is good,
if something goes wrong,
I can go to any costco to get fixed,
and most costso are right close to the major freeways.
(I live in LA, this is the case for me.)

I found out about this policy about a year ago from someone i knew who worked there. I have never abused it and never will, but when you think about it this is the reason we pay the 45.00 a year for the member benifits! It is not becausetheir prices are low because most of their prices are not and some are alot higher than other stores like target or wally world! I am not saying to abuse it i am just saying that it is nice to know that if i buy a computer or other item and it fails sooner than it should have i can exchange it or get back my $$$

blakeatwork, I don't understard,
why the receipts must be marked?
what's the point of marking receipt at the exit?
if someone picks up a marked receipt from outside, he can use it to steal thing.
marked or not marked doesn't matter.

I read a thread from off-topic about in CA, retailers have no right to check your receipt, bag at the exit unless they suspect you're stealing, is this true?

The return policy at Costco was created to aide customer satisfaction. I would highly suggest not taking advantage of them because Costco can and will change their policies. This is NOT a hot deal ... this will only trigger goons to purchase an item and return it many moons later for the wrong reason.

Yeah thats true...in places like Fry's and Best Buy, you can walk out without showing the receipt.

But it's different at Costco. Somewhere in the membership agreememnt, it says that the cusstomer agrees to submit their receipt/bag for inspection.

<< why the receipts must be marked? >>

They simply mark them with a highlighter when you leave, to check for items that the cashier might ahve missed ie something on the bottom of the cart, and it's shrink control at the same time.

<< if someone picks up a marked receipt from outside, he can use it to steal thing >>

No, because if you leave, and the receipt is already marked, obviously the receipt has been used.

<< marked or not marked doesn't matter. >>

You'd be surprised how many people try to pawn off a used receipt, and then act surprised. The receipt has the cashier's name, date, time of purchase, membership number, type of transaction (credit./debit/cash). So there is really no way to get away with it. And if it's a big-price item IE computer/TV/Stereo, the front end manager/supervisor has to sign off before the item leaves the till area. As much as I hated Costco when i left, they have a very simple, but effective security process. Although, it IS easy to rip off smaller items... but I won't go there..😉

Nope, same reason they can check your bags going into a stadium. It's a company policy, and there is no laws stating they are not allowed (I don't know about the laws in the States though..)
