Vista, as in you must have HDCP support to play HD on windows vista. Else it outputs in low res. None of dell's monitors support it that I know of, so they will be obsolete when vista hits.

This is it for me. I'm in for one since I 've been looking for a a smal lcd tv for our bedroom. This wil serve as a hdtv/pc-monitor set. I also already bought an rca hdtv tuner so it seems working out just in time.

They won't be obsolete. There is no indication that HDCP/OCMP will even take off. If it does take off EVERY piece of a/v equipment will become obsolete too.

I plan on voting with my wallet.

The Dell 3007 does now and so will the 2407 and 2007.

It doesn't matter if HDCP "takes off" or not. The fact is, windows vista will ONLY output HD res HD movies to a HDCP capable monitor. If you ever plan to upgrade to vista and watch HD movies, you will NEED a HDCP monitor to do so. There's no option. If you enjoy playing low res dvd movies on your new 24" monitor and never want to watch higher res movies, it wont matter. But if you want to be able to watch HD movies in beautiful HD, you will need HDCP.

Its similar to how all HD standalone players (blu ray or HD DVD) will require HDCP capable TV's to output HD res HD movies. So any HDTV's that dont have this wont be able to play HD movies in native res.

The only solution I've seen that might get around this is a $500 box that strips removes the HCP signal. But thats most of the cost of a 24" dell monitor.

What happens if you buy from costco and some day the thing you bought becomes defected but you are not a member of costco anymore? Can you still return it?

I am a member now. But, I am not committed to be a member for life!

I believe you have to maintain your membership for the policy to apply.

You couldn't get a 1 month membership, buy the monitor, cancel your membership and then renew in 7 years to return the monitor.

Anybody have an idea as to how much more expensive the 2407 will be? Is HDCP the only thing they're adding?

No, not sure but the original purchase is tied to your membership number.

If you lapse and then renew at a later date I would assume you get a new card/number.

The reason they can have a policy like this is because of membership dues. I can't imagine they would let you return something if you weren't a member the entire time you owned it.

But, like I said... I have no proof, just speculation and hearsay.

Knowing nothing of this technology myself, I still say I'd be suprised if, within months, if not weeks of Vista's launch, there is not a "box to remove the HCP signal" for less than $20.

I sure hope that box becomes a reality. I've got an 18 month old Sony 50" LCD and I'll pay $500 to the hackers before I spend $2500 on a new "HDCP compatible" set. Pi$$ on the MPAA. :|

I've never returned anything to costco, but we let our membership lapse for about 2 years (moved away). When we joined up again they still had all of our info in the system, we just had to get our pictures taken again. Keep the membership, its worth the cost.

how do you figure that these people are abusing this return policy? Costco says its a satisfaction guarantee... if my crap isnt as hot as the latest crap on the market, then hell I am not going to be satisfied am I? Besides they charge a yearly membership fee, so I better get something extra for it.

You mean like eating all but one piece of cake is fine and is included in that yearly membership fee?

or getting stuff for cheaper than you would at a normal retail outlets. that's the purpose of those club warehouse stores.

question about the return policy: i have some VCRs that were purchased over a year ago that have crapped out since. i asked the lady at costco, and she cited a 30day return policy, what am i missing here?
