Costco Membership

I've been thinking about buying a TV off Costco's website, and I have a question about membership. I can get a membership for $50, or I can pay the $40 surcharge to buy as a non member. Are there any perks to being a member (I probably won't buy anything else off them because the nearest is about 35 miles away). Do their extended warranties cover non members who pay the surcharge?

My favorite perk is the costco amex card. Cashback: 3% at restaurants, 2% on travel, 1% on all else. I got $60.00 back last year in 9 months of having the card so it was a net gain on my membership.

I just want to make sure that if I pay the surcharge I get the Costco 2 Year Warranty and Return Policy. I really only plan to use the membership to buy the one item.

It's a $10 difference and it will give you the membership for a year. Take a trip back in a few months and see what else you see. Worst case your down a massive 10 bucks.

for $10 more, its for another year, i say just in case, grab the member ship, if you ever have a party or anything, you can really save some $$ buying stuff there.

and who knows, they might have something your kicking yourself over when you want it and are paying another $40

Yea, I'm just going to play it safe and pony up the $10, it's nothing compared to how much money I'm saving vs. getting this somewhere else.

I'm not sure about the warranty if you pay the surcharge.

If you have a costco nearby, it is totally worth getting a membership IMO. If you go to a costco they will explain all their benefits, just off the top of my head.

Their auto center is nice if you're in the market for tires
The gas station is usually 10c cheaper then the cheapest competitor, sometimes 20-30cents. Although sometimes it's about par. (I wouldn't get membership JUST for this)
Cheap Socks/Underwear for the quality.
DVD's Books are usually cheap. I think their prices on books beat Barnes and Nobles member prices.
They sell a lot of stuff, something will be worth getting.
Their return policy is unbeatable.
Alcohol is cheap at costco.
Batteries are cheap(er)
They have stuff that other retailers may not have initially (release game consoles comes to mind)

Kirkland brand stuff tends to be at least on par with national brands. I heard Kirkland vodka is basically Grey Goose... I don't know this for sure and I'm no vodka expert so I couldn't go out and buy two bottles and tell you myself.

So I ordered a membership, but their website says a # will be e mailed within 2 business days. Will it take that long? I'm just hoping the sale doesn't end on the item I'm watching while I'm waiting for them to send me a #.

Think I could just order and get them to refund the Surcharge? I've heard Costco has really good Customer Service.

EDIT: Okay, my account must have known I have a membership because when I checked out it didn't add on the surcharge.

It knew I had a membership, it just didn't have the number yet.

Even when I thought they screwed it up Costco made everything very simple.

Coscto membership is STUPID.

Get this, if you forget to renew your membership, or you don't buy that often, and say let it slide a few months, then go back in at a later date to renew, they subtract that time.

Meaning, you didn't renew for 3 months, then go back to renew, they'll only give you a 9 month renewal.

Their reply was they want to keep the memberships renewed when they expire otherwise you get a deduction on your new card.

Talk about stupid! :(

P.S. Let us know if you experience this too.

Buying a car is one that comes to mind.

On average you'll save $3,000 if you go through them.

My brother just did this on his Mazda 6 and got it for $200 over invoice.

My uncle did it also on his Honda Pilot and saved $4,000.

They have tons of other services that rock. Look into it on their site.

I've been doing tire research lately. Here are my findings:

(1) Costco includes shipping, Tirerack doesn't (that's $10 a tire)
(2) Costco installation is an additional $10 a tire (shows up as installation package on receipt), most shops (here in bay area, ymmv elsewhere) are no cheaper than $18-$20 per tire, with some around $15 with low ratings
(3) Costco includes a tire protection gaurantee that is additional at TireRack

And finally,
(4) if something goes wrong you can bitch at one big, customer-friendly shop, rather than dealing with potentially shady tire installation shops or tirerack.

That being said, tirerack sucks at keeping tires in my size in stock. They can't estimate a date worth a damn - i am NOT a fan.
