Costco has the best fresh fruit this time of year

About a couple weeks ago, I bought 3 quarts of strawberries at Meijer and they were in average condition. I wasn't happy with the quality. Seems that its very hard to find good quality fruit this time of year.

A few weeks ago I was in costco and I picked up a nice big container of strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries. These berries were in top notch condition, shipped from California. The strawberries are huge, ripe, and juicy. I am in love!

Where do you get your fresh fruit in the winter/early spring? Happy with the quality?

Too bad they're all from Paraguay and are fertilized with human fecal matter. So don't forget to give those strawberries an extra rinse!

Shipped from California actually. Way to read the OP. 😉

I hate the fact that blueberries are so damn expensive :|

Meijer has a small container for $5
I picked up a container 2x the size and better quality at Costco for $6

I just went there this morning with a friend. I hate it. Nothing really special for prices, its just bigger containers, some products dont even have that much going for them. Its just regular containers and they sell you more of them. WHEEEE!!!
The regulars there are even more annoying than most retail shoppers in America. They also park worse.
Grocery selection is horrible. Hopefully you like what they sell, or can learn to like it. Electronics are actually OK, but I can always do better online. If you get lucky you might actually find something you need in mass quantities and at a reasonable price. Other than Cub Scouts leaders and daycare ladies I cant see why most people would need that place.

I don't. During the winter I only eat oranges and bananas. For berries I wait until they're in season locally.

Haha! Of course they're not going to have a label that says "Product of Paraguay. Now with even more fresh human fecal matter!" 😀

According to Wiki, it's still too early for California blueberries. And you can't get California blackberries until May.

Text

Blueberry production in North America typically starts in mid-May (in Florida) and ends in September, when some fruit is held over in controlled-atmosphere storage in Oregon, Washington, and Canada. (Gaskell, 2006).

Sources give different periods for the growing season in the southern hemisphere. According to the University of California Extension Service, Chile, New Zealand and Argentina begin harvesting in the winter and continue till mid-March, when Chilean blueberries are held over in controlled-atmosphere storage for about six weeks. "As a result, blueberries reach annual peak prices in mid-April."(Gaskell, 2006)

My bad. It's Chile and Argentina, not Paraguay.

Your strawberries could've easily been grown in Cali though.

Odds are, they're STILL fertilized with human fecal matter...Where do you think so many of the e-coli outbreaks come from? 😀

I live within 2 miles of 3 different strawberry fields...all owned/tended by Asian (Cambodian?) immigrants. Regardless of the fertilization methods...they're fucking great berries...far better than most offered in the local grocery stores that come from Monterey/Watsonville.

Blueberries don't grow very well here. Wrong soil and it doesn't get cold enough for them in the winter.

The local blackberry/marionberry fields are being phased out...MOST have been replaced with housing developments...but a few remain here and there.

I live in the Apricot Capital of Kahleeforneeya, as well as one of the big almond producing counties. Just down the street is a HUGE peach orchard...full of freestone peaches, and just a few miles north of us is bing cherry country...
