Costa Rica?

I just booked a flight to Costa Rica for early December. I'll be there for 15 days, and plan to stay entirely in hostels, possibly do some volunteer work if I find something interesting.

Those of you who have been to Costa Rica - how did you like it? What did you see and do? Any advice or suggestions?

What side on Costa Rica will you be on?

If you are on the east side I would suggest you take out travel insurance, keep a copy of your passport on you at all times (with the original in a safe), and secure all your belongings with locks (if you think you are good to go with locks you should double your efforts) and a safe.

If you are on the west side of the country it is generally more safe and I wouldn't be "as" concerned about security.

Th real question of the day is where are you planning on going in Costa Rica?

^^ Why is it safer on the west as opposed to the east side of the country?

(Oh, and last I checked Costa Rica wasn't an island.)

When did I say it was an island?

The Caribbean side has significantly more crime compared to the Pacific side.

I fly in to San Jose/Alajuela. No plans at all yet - I'm just now looking at where to go.

I would highly suggest going to Quepos (Manuel Antonio) if you have no destinations planned.

Don't get near young women. They take their child laws extremely seriously. Apparently it's an epidemic there. When I went there were signs everywhere and the police made sure to make it known.

White water paddling's pretty big there, but I've never had the chance to go :^(

Surfing is pretty damn good on the west coast as well. The waves are terrific. There were a bunch of guys who brought their boards and in a word...they were stoked.

There is a bar called "Pepe's" next to Mac's American Sports Bar in San Jose. Be sure to go before it gets dark, as it is not lit very well and can be intimidating.

Be sure to dress like a local so you do not draw any attention to yourself. Bring $300-$500 USD cash depending on how much fun you want to have. As you approach the door, you should be greeted by one of the friendly.."bouncers." Ask for Mario. They should instantly warm up to you and you should quickly be led into the bar.

At this point you will come in contact with one of the serveral other...err...employees. Basically they will want to know what you need. You let them know, and they will get it done.

I can't go into much more detail, but let's just say if you have never done a line of 80% pure Peruvian off of the back of a urinal at 4AM with a tranny hooker in a seedy bar in San Jose......you have never lived.

You should go to Manuel Antonio on the west coast. It was a great little spot, although the local boogie boarders are a little aggressive to foreigners.

This and drugs.
(Though prostitution is legal)

Almost everywhere I went took USD or VISA.
(With the exception of the bus which was like 5 cents)
