Cost to remove our tree in front yard.

As I posted earlier, our big tree fell over in our front lawn because of the wind storms. A guy came knocking on our door and said he does landscaping and will pull it all out, dispose of it, and re-level the lawn so that it will look like nothing has happened. He said he wants $500 to do it. Is this usually negotiable? Does it really cost this much for one tree? It isn't a HUGE tree, but it's fairly big...about 20 feet tall and not very wide.

that sounds like a bit much.

Is it a hard wood tree? If so post it on craigs list and someone will come take most of the tree for free

A 20' tree? Thats freakin small man.

Go to Home Depot and get a cheap small chainsaw.

Cut it up. Then pile it or burn it. Whatever.

I had a long post about how that was a good price, then I read your post and realized it was only 20' Really, you're right, that should be an easy job with a chainsaw.

Evergreens =! Hardwood

Hardwoods are trees that loose their leaves (deciduous sp?) in the Winter. Oak, maple cherry etc.

Are you kidding me? Well the only reason it is 20 feet is because it's been cut...otherwise it's more like 40' naturally. The base is pretty wide too, and the roots extend pretty far and I'd like to get them out too.

my mom paid $3,000 to remove three TALL oak trees (perhaps at least 100 feet apiece) in the backyard.

Ok, well you didn't say it was 40', you said it was 20'. Also, it sounded like it was uprooted.

Yes, $500 is a good price for that. If you don't think so, craigslist search tree service in your area and start calling around.

Maybe you outta measure the diameter or something. Your info seem contradictory.

If you wanna hire somebody to do it, see if they have a stump grinding machine to remove the stump. You can also burn them out, or pull out with a tractor. Or just leave it. Put one of those whiskey barrel flower planters on it.

OP, be careful about a couple of things. If you hire somebody make sure they are bonded and licensed.
Get a locate for utilities in the yard. Those tree roots may be wrapped around your water service, cable TV, phone, power. Grinding it or yanking it out without a locate or certain knowlege of the location of utilities is a bad idea.
I just turned down a job like that because I knew the stump was over/around/among the power/phone/cable for two houses. It would be a nightmare to get it out without breaking something.

Will he haul it away for that price. I had one cut up and piled in front of the house and the county would'nt pick it up and I had to pay $300 extra to have someone haul it away.

I had a guy come over our house with a caterpilar and push two oak trees down. the were probably alittle over a foot in diameter. The main reason he came over was to level off a play area for the kids, and we told him we wanted these 2 trees gone from the back yard. took him all of 3 or 4 minutes.

Total cost for a few hours was 500 dollars.
