Cost to dump Sprint by porting to GV?

Got the OK yesterday to order iPhone 4's from work, so they should be here tomorrow.

I currently pay ~$90 a month for Sprint service (taxes, insurance...etc) and rarely use it, so I was thinking to porting my Sprint number to GV. (I've had the same number since Summer of 1999.)

I am a Sprint Premier customer, and can upgrade my phone today, but, my contract is not technically over until October 2011.

If I port my number to GV, what exactly happens? Will Sprint charge me the full termination fee, or a partial fee?

Anyone know? There is no real need to carry around 2 smartphones, and even if Sprint came out with something spectacular this year, I could always sign up with a new number.

Wow, thanks. I can't wait. As soon as the new phone is in my hands, my time with Sprint is over. I am actually looking forward to having a few extra dollars to pocket every month.

Why does porting your number terminate your contract?

Because there's no longer a number associated with your account, and you therefore can't use their service anymore, so they automatically terminate your account/contract and charge you an ETF if it applies.

Why can't you just be assigned a new one?

because then the carrier couldn't charge you for the ETF and a new account for the new number.

It sounds like the OP wants to ditch Sprint anyways. You could probably get Sprint to work with you if you wanted to get a new number.... Sprint gets a lot more money out of monthly fees as opposed to a one time ETF.

You guys that are ditching Sprint, what do you have for phones? Girlfriend wants a new phone, so I'm always looking for people getting rid of Sprint phones.

Wait...you're gonna go and get the iPhone 4 on AT&T now?

Sounds like his job is paying for it. AT&T doesn't doesn't have to even have 3G here and I would drop my current service and deal with the slower speed for no bill.

Really busted Hero. Power button doesn't work most of the time (have to squeeze really hard) and scarred and scratched screen. It looks like it's been in a war. lol

Yep. And when all the people move off to Verizon, AT&T will probably get better.

There have been days when I couldn't place a call, but it hasn't been that bad lately.

Started the GV port an hour ago. I'll update with the experience if anything weird pops up.
