I know you buy this phone time on "cards". I need an emergency-use phone for someone. What is the per-minute rate on these things?

For calls made within your local calling area, one minute of talk time uses one "unit"; calls outside of your area are two units per minute. The cards come in various unit capacities and also have somewhat varying date extensions (you have to use one card every so often to keep the service active). The nitty gritty is:

10-unit = $8, adds 30 days to service time
30-unit = $20, 60 days
120-unit = $50, 60 days
300-unit = $100, 60 days
Annual service card = $100, adds 365 days and comes with 100 units.

There are various bonuses you can get and the occasional tracfone-offered promo come up every now and then, e.g. extra 30-units on 120-unit card. Without these promos, then the cheapest option for an emergency phone is 10-unit card every month but that's easily bumped to the annual service card if you use the phone even a few minutes a month.

Tracfone's website can give you a better idea of the service than I can.
