Cost of medical treatment

I've recently been alerted to the fact that I have severe sleep apnea. I finally set up a friends camcorder and taped myself and I actually stop breathing followed by very loud snoring. It happens many times an hour. I get no quality sleep and I am constantly exhausted.

After a doc viewed my tape, they want to do this and do that and see this specialist, etc- I have no insurance. I was like can you just prescribe me one of those breathing machines (i've already researched it) and let me get one of those - they seem to work most of the time. . .

Still they want me to go through all these tests. . .

Cliffs notes:

I'm sure I have sleep apnea
I know I need a machine for it (a cpap - continuous positive air pressure machine).
You need a scrip for it.
Doc wants all these expensive things done I can't pay for.

Is this typical?

maybe you can make your bedroom a giant cpap

seal up all the doors and windows and cracks and hook a big blower to the ventilation and raise the pressure in the whole room a few pounds

could be they are just taking u through the proper steps to see if u dont need the machine at all. there might be another way for you to sleep without the machine and maybe thats what the doc is thinking

How do you know you just need a CPAP machine? You might need a BPAP machine, or you could make do with an oral appliance. He's just taking taking steps to be certain, and in medicine it's nice to do that.
