Cost of a computer running 24/7?

Most flukes are 10 amps for current. The statement about a DC meter reading 0 for ac is true on voltage, however, an induction pickup for current should work. It reads the magnetic flux, not the waveform.

Ah ,got ya,I'll try it then🙂 ,I don't know about the splitting the cord though, couldn't I just do it over the whole cable & 1/2 the reading?

I run 5 computers 24/7. My cost is $10.25 per computer per month. That does not count increased
cooling costs during the summer. I have 2 monitors. One on a KVM switch and the other in the other room which is very seldom fully powered up.

12p/kwh!,where did you get that?
I hope its not that much!:Q

When me & a mate of mine worked it out a couple of years ago ,for a 100w draw it added up to about £5/mth.
I took it up to £6/mth cos I was assuming my XP DDR rig would draw a little more power than a PIII rig(where the 100w came from)

Got my electricity statement through from British Gas this morning..it costs 12.xx pence for the first 200 odd kwh and then about 5.8 pence for any extra kwh.

We are on a token meter at home - the guy who lived in my house before me must've been a bad payer. You wouldn't believe how hard it is to get an honest answer to whether electricity/gas is the same price or not regardless if you have a token meter or not - I have a feeling that its much cheaper if you don't have a token meter. I might just have to ring up Transco tonight and start the ball rolling and get rid of these meters for good.

How much is your electricity per kwh?

I had a key metre as well with southern electric, on average with 3 computers running, tvs on and lights on all the time I was paying £20 a week for electricity.

Only moved into this new house in september and got the metre changed back to a normal metre, the bill for the month came in and it worked out to £15 average, so yeah the key metre was taking more, it adds up too 🙁

Just as well i complained about it!

Assimilator,
You can't do it over the whole cable, the magnetic fields will cancel each other. Use a Standard (cheap) extension cord, carefully cut away the outer insulation and split about 12 inches of wire. Separate the wires, which still have their internal insulation then measure.

I don't know exactly what my cost is but it's not much here in Cincinnati. My electric bill runs around $110/month (higher in the winter) for a pretty big 2 story house. I run 6 distributed computing (SETI) PC's 24/7 with two 19" monitors, a 17" and a 14". Most of the time the monitors are off, prob about 70% of the 24 hours they are off. For me, I would guess it's about $3-4/month per PC.

just do like I do, replace all the light bulbs in the house with the low watt coiled flourescents, it seems to more than make up the difference for one computer 🙂

I run 2 desktops and 1 laptop at home, and never noticed a difference in my electric bill.
