I bought a dvd set of this TV show that was originally aired back in 1980. It really is amazing what you can learn just from watching this. It has astronomy, history, physics, chemistry, basically all sciences touched in this seven disc show.

The show even touches on the touchy subject of science vs religion, basically taking on the stance that god doesnt exist, and this was in the early 80s!

If you havent seen it, it is definitely worth it to pick up and watch.

Demon Haunted World should be required reading in every American high school science class.

I love the series, have seen them all several times. I'd like to buy the set but it's expensive. I own the book and really enjoyed it. Carl Sagan was indeed a very unique man.

I remember watching this show when I was little. My dad watched it. I vaguely remember an episode when they were talking about the number "google", and he had a roll of paper with zeros on it.

It's great science, but his constant liberal utopia talk gets grates on you after awhile.

I wonder if there is anything they can do, say in the remastering department, above and beyond what they did to improve it for DVD format? Will the HD DVD/Blu-Ray or whatever finally wins version look and sound even better, or is that unlikely due to the source?

it is an awesome series. i watched it a few years after Sagan died, and it seems almost eerie to me, like he is talking from beyond the grave or something. His voice is very interesting and authoritative sounding, the program holds up amazingly well for how old it is.

Another excellent science documentary series for anyone interested is called "light fantastic", made by the BBC. I've watched a ton of science docs and this one is up there.

I agree. Just goes to show you how brilliant minds are just as susceptible to fantasy as the plebeians which they thumb their nose at.

Great series nonetheless.

People always forget about the library.

Also, it seems like it's on tv nightly; science channel or one of those channels. I watch it when there's nothing else on.

Yep, I think... Tuesday? is space night on the science channel.

I've seen a few episodes, one which mentioned the Alexandria library, good stuff. The production was a bit dated but it didn't detract much from it.

Yes, and Watson & Crick discovered DNA's double helix configuration during an LSD trip, subsequently descibed metaphorically as "in a dream."

And ditto (an LSD trip discovery) by Dr Kary B. Mullis who invented, & won the 1993 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for, the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method of gene sequencing.

. . . or so the lore goes.

The book came out after the TV series, so it is a book based on TV, not the other way round.

I watched it on the initial showing back in '80. My favorite eposide is the one which covers the Drake equation. It is also currently showing on Wedenday morning (7am). Or was showing then, things change frequetly on the cable channels so who knows?
