I need a new power supply and I am sure both will have enough power for my system. My question is which one is quieter? My computer sits right next to my monitor, so noise is an issue.

Thanks for any info! :)

And both of these would be considered quiet powersupplies then? Or would there be a better choice for under $100 or so?

I got the 550Vx and ya I can't hear it at all over the other fans I had it running by itself at first when I now put it in..barely made any noise

What's in your box?

The 550 is a great power supply but will definitely put out some noise when loaded. I was surprised how quiet it was at first. But when loaded nicely (about 350W) its fan picks up speed noticeably and quickly becomes the loudest thing in the system.

What did you use to load it to ~350w?

I'm also thinking of getting the 550VX. Too bad SPCR did only review the 450w model, they would be the best source for a direct noise comparison.. based on other sites, the other aspects of VX550 are near-perfect.

Is the fan controlled based on load, temperature or both load and temperature?

The OP made a similar post here and someone linked to some information from Corsair:

vx450 has a noise level of around 21.5dB up to 400w, then spikes up to 29dB at 450w

vx550 has a noise level of around 21dB up to about 330w, around 25dB at 400w, then slowly rising up to 40dB at 550w

It was hitched to an Asus P5WG2WS, 4GBDDR2 800, QX6700B3 at 300x12, a pair of 8800 Ultras and four WD1TB drives. When cool the PS was very quiet but running NFS Carbon at 1600x1200 it picked up speed and was the noisiest thing in the system, far noisier than the Seasonic 700W PS that was connected before. These were spare parts we threw together just testing stuff and was my personal observation. The power supply seems to be robust given the price, has APFC and better made than say Antec. It's a Channel Well Tech unit I am told.

I see a big difference in wattage consumption. I'd estimate that you (redlinez33) made a good buy. But tell how it goes. :)

JonnyGuru rated the 550 (and the 520hx for that matter). a 550 will give you more headroom if you're going to load up on the CPU/GPU department. Also, they have a good deal on 550s at Buy.com.

I made the same decision last week and thought about the 550 for headroom, then ended up splurging on the 520 to cut down on cord clutter to help vemtillation.
