Corsair TX650 Owners - Question

Hey everyone.

I bought a Corsair TX650 thinking it was going to be an improvement over my Earthwatts as far as sound was concerned. It's the loudest component in my computer on Idle by far. I never found out why but on my new install, I got an Asus board which monitors everything and including the PSU fan speed. It shows it spinning on idle at 1700 rpm. It that normal? I'm hoping it's not because honestly that is ridiculous.

I WAS an owner of a TX650 (the older version) and I never had an issue with noise. Is this the older black and yellow version of the new v2?

Maybe send Corsair support an email and ask if it's a meant to be like that?

This is the black and yellow one.

I might mention though that my system is near dead silent except for this. Do you recall how fast it spun? Sound is so subjective..what's quiet for one person is a jet engine to another so I'm curious is it's defective or I'm just picky.

I have an RMA ticket so I'll see. Seems to be a lot of people talking about the same issue with corsairs in general on the corsair forum. I think a lot of people are much more tolerant of noise than others.

The only complain I have is that it's advertise as quiet. For me, this pos better DEAD quiet. Not tolerable. Not..."I can't hear it with headphones". Not, my video card drowns it out.

Very irritating.

@ I just did that thanks. Poked around the corsair forums too since they have a really active mod. Seems to be the response to any issue is "hit the RMA on the left and send it in".

I have that PSU and if I can figure out a program to monitor fan speed at idle I'll check it out and gladly report back.

I'm using the ASus AI Suite. Not sure if you need an Asus board to use it.

i too WAS a TX650v2 owner. i am like you OP, in that i absolutely must have a quiet rig, and the TX650v2 definitely didn't cut it for me. i was actually quite surprised, considering its a modified and rebadged SeaSonic unit. i guess the fan must be one of the modifications, or at the very least the fan speed controller. while i never had any software installed that gave me a PSU fan speed reading (and thus can't confirm whether it was idling at 1700rpm), it was easily the loudest component in the system. but even though i couldn't confirm its fan speed, i'm reasonably certain that it was working as it should have. that same computer now uses a SeaSonic SII12 620, and its fan doesn't even spin at idle. under the same ~400W load, the fan spins, but so slowly that its completely inaudible...add to that the fact that there's no coil whine or any other strange component noises, and this thing is DEAD silent.

in its defense, i will say this - the TX650v2 was no louder under load than it was at idle...and i had it pretty well loaded with a 6-core CPU crunching an assortment of DC projects, and a 5870 GPU crunching Milkyway@Home and SETI@Home 24/7 (for a ~400W draw). that being said, it was ultimately too loud for me. like the OP said, sound is subjective, so if i had to vaguely quantify it, i' say that the TX650v2 isn't loud at all as far as PSU's go. but it is far from silent.

i have a SeaSonic X650 in another rig which is almost as quiet as the SII12 620 in my other rig...suffice it to say its silent as far as PSU's go. Corsair sells an AX650, which is a slightly modified and rebadged X650, but its a bit more expensive than the X650. i've never used one, so i don't know if the fan or the fan speed controller is one of Corsair's modifications to this unit or not.

Is this the Seasonic you used? I'm going to order something.

I definitely feel yah on the noise. It's really hard to get opinions because everyone's tolerances are all over the place.

True story, on another board, one cat said that his GTX 470 wasn't noisy. "I can't hear it over the AC/Heater". Lol, what a moron.

The S12II 620 fan does spin at all times, it's not a Hybrid fan control PSU. Only X-series and Platinum series have that. Hence I don't quite understand this

yes, you are correct. i'm going on 22 hours without sleep right now, so i apologize for the brain fart and the juxtaposed type...

yes, that is one of the PSU's i have. but as lehtv pointed out, that's actually the one who's fan spins all the time. still, i can say with confidence that it is the quietest fan in the rig, and sometimes you could swear its not even spinning, as even quiet case fans and the like can be heard over it.

this is the other PSU i have, the SeaSonic X650: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817151088

while i do like the X650 more than the SII12 620, the SII12 620 is still way up there in my book. plus its a much better value considering the price. another good power supply at this price point is the Antec NEO ECO 620C, which is a rebranded SeaSonic SII12 620: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371031

now, i don't know if the NEO ECO 620C is just rebranded, or modified as well by Antec. but i will say that it sounds as quiet to me as the SII12 620 its based on (i have one in my work computer).
