corsair PC3200 part num

Hey i went to fry's and they have two different part numbers for what seem to be corsair pc3200 512 meg chips. One has a part number CMX512 3200PT (which i assume to be the latest corsair XMS series RAM) and the other part number was CMS512A 3200C2. I dont know what the difference is between the two. They both say they are CAS2 so i dont think that is the difference. So i dont know what the difference is. Also the one with CMS in the part number is more expensive. But since both are CAS2 and one has the CMX part number I would think they seem to be the same part. Does anyone know? Thanks.

I dunno, I checked the part #s at googlegear and newegg, the product list at corsairmicro.com, and even searching on google and altavista and I couldn't find ANY mention of CMS512A RAM.

Yeah, I know i looked up corsair too, so I am quite confused. Maybe it was a typo, i dunno. Frys is never super good with info on that kinda stuff, but i cna't say for sure. Plus being almost 20 buck in price diff makes me kinda wonder.

The CMX512-3200PT is the CAS2.5 stuff with the platinum heatspreader, instead of the normal heatspreader. It is not officially rated at CAS2 at PC3200 speeds so if they told you that then they are mistaken.

CMS512A-3200C2 is not a valid part number anywhere I can find. Did you read that off the box or was it written down somewhere? Correct part should be CMX512-3200C2 ( I own a stick). This is the officially rated CAS2 part for PC3200 speeds (2-3-3-7 by SPD).

ah, that makes sense. Thanks for the info. Also, do the platinum heatspreaders make a difference? And what is on the CAS2 3200 sticks then, just normal ram with no heatspreaders so that u can see the chips? Thanks.

The Platinum heatspreader doesn't make much of a difference. The PC3200 CAS2 does have the regular heatspreader. It should anyways, neweggs pc3200 cas2 comes with heatspreaders.
