corsair hx520 for a gtx sli?

Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if it did. People tend to grossly overestimate the amount of power they need.

That said, I don't know for sure that it will work.

Doesn't the GTX draw 175w at max load ? Let's assume 150w, twice = 300w. CPU can EASILY draw 100w, don't even mention overclocked. Thats 400w + right there. The corsair is badass, but you don't want to run it near it's maximum capacity or even over it, when we add in the mobo's power usage, the ram, the HD's etc. A cheap option could be this: http://www.pcclub.com/product_...ls.cfm?itemno=A6296671

You run into a couple of problems trying to run dual GTX on the HX520. One is the fact that the PSU offers only 2 PCI-e connectors and each card requires 2 connectors. Next is you will end up using up 4 of the molex connectors using adapters to get the other 2 PCI-e connectors you will need. This doesn't leave many Molex left for other things like HDDs and its not a good idea to add other items to a cable that is already supporting a PCI-e adapter.

Not in my case - a Seasonic 430W 80+ couldn't power my new rig. Getting more than you need is never a bad idea.

Couldn't power what rig? The E6750 in your sig?

That guy is nuts. He prolly has a dud of a PSU, and he now thinks all seasonic PSU's suck. HIS seasonic couldn't power his rig, meaning his seasonic needs to be rma-ed.

I'm using a HX520, and with a Q6600 at 3.51GHz, 8800GTS 512 clocked at 792/1890/2106 (I'd say throw in an extra 25W for a GTX), 3 HDs, and 4DIMMS. During Crysis I'm pulling about 280W-300W FROM THE wall. Factor in 80% efficiency and that's about 230-240W in the system. The CPU and GPU both fully loaded, about 270W DC. My 12V rail is rock solid, but with a single card setup it's very hard to stress the HX520. But I wouldn't be surprised if the HX520 could run a GTX in a SLI given the power draw I see in my system. I definitely have the headroom for an extra GTS, but sadly - my P35 doesn't support SLI.

just a thought, for the $500 you'd spend on another 8800GTX, you could get 2 8800GT's which only have 1 PCI-E power connector give or take $40, and run at lower wattages, with smaller amperage requirements

then sell the 8800GTX on ebay you could easily get $450 for it

won't be quite the same performance bump you'd get from 2 GTX's in SLI, but still a big bump

but it looks like you might end up spending an extra 150 or so if you get another GTX to get a power supply that can support both cards

chances are you probably could power both on the corsair, I've got the same PSU and it's a good one, but you take the risk that you're underpowering the cards, which can damage them over time, not to mention the usual mishaps, unexplained reboots, lock ups etc.

personally I wouldn't risk it, besides G80 is on the way out.

Why not spend the extra $50 to get the HX620?

I think he's implying that he had previously purchased the HX520 and it's in his current system based on his sig. so he probably has to buy a whole new PSU if his isn't sufficient

Yes, especially if you aren't o/c'ing the Q6600. The Corsair is rated for full output @ 50C. However it's not recommended to run a psu near max load in order to keep the temps down and prolong the life of the unit. The psu fan will also ramp up creating more noise. On the bright side Corsair gives you a 5 yr. warranty.
