Corsair 520HX or 620 HX

Alright, so this is pretty much the last component I need to pick out for my system build that I will be ordering next week. Is the Corsair 520HX enough for my system? Or should I spend the extra for the 620HX? The CPU will be OC'ed (hopefully around 3.6GHz). I'm going to be running 2 SATA hard drives in RAID 0 along with a DVDRW drive. In the future I will probably add two more sticks of RAM to have 4 gigs. Also, I don't plan on running SLI ever. Thanks.

I would get the 620 for the simple reason that in five years you will need that power. The Corsair is a good value in that Segment of the Market.

While I prefer a single rail design the Three Rails @ 18 Amps each for a combined 54 Amps is a good thing.

Well, what if I had no intention of using the same power supply in 5 years? More than likely, this PSU would only be used in this build.

No OCP on the rails so it's actually a single 50A rail. 🙂

FWIW the HX520 is good for any single video card solution with a C2D/C2Q/A64. However the HX620 is only $110 AR @ ClubIT.com and having the extra headroom could prove beneficial down the road.

The combined max power on the 520HX is about 40A, you dont just add the rails together.

Please Read...... I was referring to the 620

hold on, I have both.... but it's faster to look it up here: http://www.corsair.com/products/hx.aspx

50 A on the 620 and 40 A on the 520. I got the 620 b/c I was VERY impressed with my 520 and I needed a new psu for the file server. It was btwn the cmpsu 450vx and the hx520. however, the price was so close on the 520 vs the 620 that, um, well, my wife doesn't know yet...

thanks john for not being there for me last week when I paid 128 AR at mwave 😉

btw: The red of the 620 is way more evil-looking than the wimpy yellow on the 520. 620 gets +5 cool points for all open cases.

Alright, thanks for the information guys. I decided to take the advice and go with the 620 just to be safe. After rebates and all the 620 comes out to about $100 and at that price seems like a steal. I may order my parts from newegg and clubIT tomorrow or Tuesday. I just need to finalize all my decisions 🙂.

I'm still not 100% on the fan (Scythe S-FLEX SFF21F 120mm) for my Thermalright Ultra-120, but I figured out that I can get 2 of those fans for less than the price of one at newegg. When you order 2 or more of that fan it's only $13.99 a piece! As long as this fan moves enough air then I'm good. I'm also wondering if I should mount 2 on the TR U-120.

The motherboard I still may change my mind on, but only for the Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3P, which is currently not in stock at newegg. The abit IP35 Pro provides me with the features I need (Firewire, raid) and is a high end board at a lower price than the other guys.

Anyways, Thanks again.

ip 35 pro is OOS at newegg again. did you find a mobo yet? 620 is a great psu, that should last you 5-10 yrs. I've heard many say that scythe s-flex is a great fan to pair with the U120 xtreme.

If you can afford both, you probably shouldn't settle for the minimum. I'd just go with the 620HX right now so you don't have to spend money on ANOTHER PSU should the 520HX fail to power your future upgrades. Better to spend 30 more bucks now than another 140 or so bucks later down the road.

is it really 30 more for the 620? 620 is 100 right now at clubit, where can you find 520 for 70? I think it's more like 10-15 more for 620, and that is simply too close imho to not spring for the 620.

wow, that sounds almost too good to be true. you can really find an hx 520 for $40 in canada? you could buy up a ton of those and sell them for $85 US and make a killing.

nice link, zap. I got very excited about the vx 550 until I read the parts about how much the fan spooled up. I love the fact that my hx 520 and 620 are so quiet that I can hear everything else in the computer. That's probably not worth a ton of money, but with the hx 620 at $100 then I think the vx550 needs to be closer to $65 to be a decent value.

huh......it got a 9.5 in the review there literally is nothing that nakes it a bad chaoice...except for maybe it could be louder than other cosairs. All in a a very nice PSU for the money!!

I didn't say that it was a bad choice, I just said that it needed to be in the $65 range to be a GOOD choice. Normally the hx 620 is much more than $100, so when/if that psu goes up then the vx550 will be worth more. Johnny guru does a great job evaluating psu's, but if they thought that the vx550 and hx 620 were within a few bucks of each, which one do you think they'd recommend?

actually for the quality $100 does not seem unreasonable!!

no, I agree that $100 for that psu is not a bad price, I'm just saying that if I can get the vx550 for $100 or the hx620 for $100 then I'll take # b.

Why not go with the Tuniq Tower?

Why not go with the Tuniq Tower?

U120 EX performs a little better generally.

as long as you buy a very powerful cooling fan to go with it. afaik, nobody has bought a scythe sflex, a TR ultra 120 extreme, and a tuniq and then compared temps. That actually came up when AT did their cpu cooler comparison. Also, you don't hear a lot of stories about people having to lap their tuniqs, and they're 35 or so cheaper than the ultra 120 extreme. Check out how confused this guy is: http://forums.anandtech.com/me...=2097540&enterthread=y
