Well I got the message on my other computer. It says to put in the windows xp cd and press r which I do. I then have to choose the installation I want to repair. The only choice is 1 so I press 1 and enter. It then gives me a BSOD with a registry error. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

There Are A Few Things You Can Try

1)Have you tried doing a chkdsk /r in the recovery console

2)Have you tried copying your old system hive from %windir%\repair ?

i had that problem a month ago, and i found a windows help webpage on exactly how to manual restore the hive (registry) files. it was the only way i could find to save it, and it worked. i booted into recovery console from the xp install disk and then followed what files to copy over from the ms webpage. the only problem is i dont remember what the exact page was.

I do that. However when I use the harder method at step 4 I put in 1 and press enter. The BSOD comes up with a registry error.

Yipes, that's pretty hosed.

Right, get yourself Memtest (memtest86.org), and see if your memory is okay.

If it is, then you'll want to get this, which will allow you access to the hard disk from a Windows environment that boots from a CD. Once in there, you can manually restore the registry, either from C:\Windows\Repair (for the first registry backup that was saved when Windows was installed), or from a Restore Point (C:\System Volume Information\restore_(hex)\RP<number>).

Good luck!

You have a corrupted registry hive.

Go here:

follow the steps and it should work.

try a bartspe disk or a live linux CD and see if the network work with that
just to make sure it's not hardware in which case power down totally and possibly reset the cmos.

other than that try other hive files or try system restore now that the system is booting

also mak sure you run chkdsk

I had the exact same problem on a laptop day before yesterday. With no time to remember how to fix it I had to simply reformat/reinstall. It happened immediately after running Windows Update and rebooting.

I wonder if there's some weird side-effect of a new security patch?
