corrupt profile

After a bad shutdown (winXP, fat32) I got this message on login, it logs me in with a temporary profile. I logged out, logged in as Administrator, and couldn't figure out what to do 😱 Should I delete my account and recreate one with the same name? It says there is a UID for each account, even if you make one with the same name, but I dont have anything that should be affected by doing that...

What is the correct way to get my profile fixed/restored?

the first is: "Windows cannot load your profile because it may be corrupted. Contact your administrator."

the second is: "Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off."

This situation happened to my brother two days ago; his comments:
"All my settings and the contents of my desktop are gone; I consider them lost. I now log in as Administrator and have reconfigured most of my settings. Under C:\Documents and Settings\, there is a folder corresponding to my previous profile; however, there is no [+] to expand it, and clicking on it yields an error message. So I can't delete this folder because it isn't really there, and I have no idea what's going on, or how to fix it. :|"

What that means is that you should re-do your profile. I had the same message today on my laptop when I went to test iPass for a forthcoming trip. All I got was a message like yours.

The solution was to reinstall iPass and that solved it. We are ready to travel tomorrow. 🙂

As an aside . . . I was plagued by a few problems on corrupted files when I was in FAT32 under XP. The problem is that CHKDSK does not do FAT32 checking worth sickum. It is designed for NTFS and only functions fully with NTFS. I repaired those file and FAT errors by booting with my old Win98 Emergency Boot disk and running SCANDISK. It found the errors and fixed them. No more problems there.

So, you have choices. With FAT32, you have to rely on older disk repair technologies. If you change to NTFS, XP's servant CHKDSK will work for you.

Log on as Admin and copy your Favourites and Desktop icons to somewhere safe. Then delete your profile info. Log on as yourself again and copy those icons and Fav's back again. You might notice the odd change in a couple of programs but for the most part it should look the same (after you reset your wallpaper, etc).

Cheers
