Sorry for posting here, but no one reads (or hardly reads) The OS forum so I am reposting here. Its semi HW as it was a full HD that caused this. :)

Hi all. I have an issue with a friends PC. His HD was maxxed out, always saying the drive was full, blah blah blah. So I install another HD, set it up as D:, change the drive letters to the cdrom and burner. Created a swap on d: and kept a small swap file on c:. Rebooted, he logs in with his profile all is ok. I move his Itunes music to the new D: and clear up 20 gigs off of the c: so all should be cool right? NOT! Now when he logs in it gives the standard profile corrupt error and that it is using a temp profile. So I'm like, crap! So I boot into safe mode, log in as administrator, create a completely new/different profile with administrator right. Reboot to new profile, look in documents and settings and his old folder is renamed with other letters. I do a search for all of his docs and info from the corrupt profile folders and nothing is there. This PC was upgraded about a year ago from Win98 to Winxp Pro. I search the whole HD for his stuff and nada, zilch. I do find about 2 gigs of FILE001 et al....on the HD, so I told him to create a folder on the secondary drive I had installed and dont log in under the corrupt profile any more. Now, I have done this many time, create a new profile with admin right, log in as that and can usually copy the data from the corrupt profile but this time I cant. I'm pretty sure the 2 gigs of FILE000X files are probably his stuff. How can I repair his profile on a Winxp Pro OS that was upgraded from Win98? He has years of stuff he desperatly needs! I kept telling him to clear out your C: cuz a full drive will do this. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks.

Anyone? I can't find a fix for this on MS website or anywhere else. All of the fixes do not really pertain to my situation. HELP! :)

I have no clue what's wrong, and I doubt anyone else is (hence a lack of any answers on either forum). All I can think if is that it could've had something to do with changing drive letters (which wouldn't normally be a problem), or that it had something to do with playing with swap files. Again, I have no clue.

Have you tried using a Windows XP Pro CD and run the repair utility to see if it finds any problems to fix? Also, if you go to the properties of the corruypt profile does it say that the size is correct (however large it should be for the files he has in it)?

Havent tried the repair option yet as I dont know where he got his copy of XP pro or if its even a legitimate copy. The properties for the profile is under a meg which is definately wrong. All of the FILE000X add up to about 2 gigs which seems about right.
