We just got an email from our regional manager telling people to knock it off. It was getting ridiculous. We had an employee sending emails throughout the office asking folks to designate donations to an outfit that would use the money to pay for his kid's charter school tuition.

what the fuck? how about you work harder and get a promotion so you can pay for your kid's education.

heh sure it's not going to do anything but tell the charter school that there's a chance his checks will bounce for lulz

Soliciting me at work is NOT the way to do it.

Oh ok. Were you planning on stopping by the district office to make a donation? Lobbying the government to actually provide the schools with the funds they need? Anything besides bitching about something completely petty?

You had to take 2 seconds out of your day to say "no". I feel so sorry for you.

Actually, it only took me .5 seconds to say "no."

To me, it's just as annoying as someone knocking on my door in solicitation.

I'm glad it doesn't bother you. It does bother me.

Are you complaining about my complaining?

I am!

God I love this country 😛

If schools were smart, they would buy candy in bulk and sell them for $1-$2/bar. Hell, that's how we got money for our clubs in high school. I'd rather pay $1-$2/bar than pay for shit I don't want for $20+.

wow, bunch of tight wad meanies. buy a little something it won't break your bank. The relatives already got hit up ten times so now the coworkers need to help out a bit.

Just post up something in the break/coffee room and make it easier for people to sign up on their own time instead of disturbing them while they're working.

alright, i'll go with that. i don't want anyone pestering me to buy, but i don't mind them saying this is a fundraiser for my kid to benefit *insert whatever cause here*. Sometimes even the parent will add, "don't feel you have to buy."

Some people don't want to buy crap off people. It's not about being a cheapwad.

Yeah, it really is. When you work in an office environment, it is understood that you buy crap from other people so they will buy from you. If you dont have kids who sell stuff, then you still are entitled to buy something, even if its small.

I'm bringing boy scout popcorn signup sheets in tomorrow to hit up the office. They've mostly already expressed interest in the popcorn so its not a big deal.

I've joined the "quit selling overpriced shit that takes money out of your own community and puts it into the hands of companies taking advantage of young children peddling their wares for them" bandwagon.

If it's a worthy cause, i.e. most recently, it was youth football, I'll just write "$5 donation" or "$10 donation" on their form.

"Here's $5. Your group just made as much money as if I bought 25 candy bars from you."

actually, that's a good idea, except they are on to you. these companies now offer incentive prizes based on how many units a kid sells.

It's true. Some highschool kid came around selling magazine subscriptions for study abroad (32 bucks was the cheapest offer for some bullshit like vanity fare); I offered a $20 donation. He turned it down. 😵

Agreed it sucks and on the Corporate pet peeve issue....why do some people have to say 'hello/how are you doing/what's up' every time they see you during the day....drives me insane.

Lol

For those that dont have kids. Can you have a fundraiser to put your dog through puppy training?

Or a fund raiser to buy a new xbox game?

The only thing I buy is Girl Scout cookies, because let's face it -- they're awesome.

Otherwise, I say no. When I was a kid, I refused to sell the crap that they tried to make us sell with the exception of the $1 candy bars -- because, well, they were awesome too.

I remember in high school, they tried making us sell crap (candles, etc) to pay for our junior prom. I refused, as I thought it was a really stupid idea. The prom organizer caught me in the hall one day and said:

Organizer: "IndyColtsFan, I noticed you haven't sold anything yet. You'd better hurry or else, you'll have to pay $10 more for your ticket!!!!!!!!!"
IndyColtsFan: "I'd rather pay the $10 than sell stuff no one wants and besides that, I am not sure I am even going yet."
Organizer: "But, but, what if you decide to go?!?!?!"
IndyColtsFan: "Errr, like I said, I'll just pay $10 extra for my ticket rather than irritating the heck out of people trying to sell them stuff no one really wants."

The stupid part was that the $10 "upcharge" was only on your ticket; so you still paid the regular price for your date's ticket. $10 to avoid selling cheap junk? Sign me up!

Not to threadcrap, but my biggest pet peeve would be the people who don't know when to end a conversation. Fortunately, my current job doesn't have many people like that, but my last job had TONS of them. You'd give them the non-verbal hints (look at your watch, look off in the distance, stand up if you were seated) and then move to the verbal hints ("Woah, it is getting late and I have a ton to do!") and they STILL would not get it. Finally, I just had to be rude and just get up and leave.
