Corporate computer users, how bad is your system?

Getting a little fed up. We have ok systems here for development (P3/1Ghz/512M) but they are totally bogged down with every stupid corporate IT toy to the point the system runs like a 486.

- SMS
- Timbuktoo
- Norton AV
- "Secure" file deleter
- Misc system inventory programs

I won't even mention what email client we use (not allowed to publicly it's so bad)

Anyone else as bad off?

By and large the developers here have P3 833 systems with 256MB of RAM (a far cry from the P200/32MB systems we were using up until about a year ago). We aren't saddled with much as we maintain our own systems. We have to run Norton AV, but that's about it.

As for e-mail, we just use Outlook with an Exchange server.

Other than the domain controller (Appro 1124, 1.2 GHz Athlon), our systems are ARCHAIC!!! Most of us are running on Dell Celeron 400a's with 64 megs of PC66 ram, 4.1 gb 5400 RPM drives, 15" monitors and ATi Rage 3D 4mb. I got fed up and brought in one of my spare systems from home, so I have a P4 1.5 / 512 MB RAM.

Edit: And get this, our POS software (Point of Sale or Piece of Sh!t, take your pick) hasn't had a core update since 1992 (4th Dimension)!

I use a P200MMX with 80 Megs of RAM.
We use so much crap on the systems that even on NT 4.0 the task manager usually says that there is well over 200 megs of RAM being used.
If anything crashes and it needs a reboot it takes about half an hour out of my day.

We have so many windows open at once that they give us really nice 21" trinitron monitors that cost about double what a new base unit would cost. Talk about getting your priorities the wrong way round.

Oh my desktop is horrible. I'm stuck on a 1.4ghz PIV system with a mere 512mb of RAM. Piece of crap, why did they stick me with this when I really wanted an Athlon 2100+. ;) Yep, I'm spoiled here. We try to stay as close to the edge as is reasonable in a corporate enviroment.

hahaha

Sounds like a lot of companies choose to "save" money on systems to lose more $$$ from decreases productivity.

P3 450 with 256 ram. It's grossly inadequate. There is a p3 667 beside me that I have been meaning to plug in for a while but it will still suck ass so my motivation to upgrade isn't high.

Mine's a 266mhz with 64MB, NT4. Does what I need, and I make sure the people doing the production work get the fast systems. Not only does that make good sense, but when people come to me and complain I just show them my system, and they shut up and go away. :)

How about a Celeron 600 with 64RAM, 10GB HD, ATI 8MB with only a cheap 17 inch monitor? It isn't any slow, though. It runs office apps quite speedily, thanks to it running WinME. Had they put XP on it, it would indeed run like a 486.

I think you mean "despite it running WinME" ;)

Sad, but true. I really wanted they put Win2K on this PC, but prefer to keep my mouth shut (at least for a while).

I know those rumours that ME is slow, but hey its faster than XP, especially with that little RAM.

I've got a HP P2 333 with 192 ram, a 4.3 and 3.1 gig hd (latter filled with mp3s) dual Matrox Millenium 2's :D (4meg and 8meg) and a 20" and 17" monitor. I'm running 98SE (not supposed to :p) and the only thing that we have to run is Norton, but even then they wouldn't know if I didn't. Basically I can do with this system what I please. My only person touch besides 98SE is an Intellimouse Explorer.

I'm running a Dell Dimension 4100. P3/1GHz. Win98SE

It started with 128mb but, since I'm in the IT department I dug up an extra 128mb for it.

It also started with a TNT M64 vid card, but I eventually procured a Matrox G450. :)

The IT dept runs Innoculate IT on it monitoring incoming/outgoing files

. I put Timbuktu on it so I could monitor our servers.

Oh yeah... well our boss bought us all upgrades a while ago. We used to have P166 with 32 MB PC66. He went to Best Buy and bought 20 HP Pavilion 6535's :disgust::eek:

Celery 466
64 MB Ram...PC100 I think
8 gig 5400
Intel chicpset video.. not the 810 whatever was before...

The worst was all the HP crap that WAS on it. I wiped it and installed '98 and it's running pretty well...

They had me doing some pseudo-development work so have one of my personal spares (Duron 800, 512 DDR, 30 gig 7200, Geforce 2 GTS)hooked up to a T1 right next to it... :)

I have a PIII 1000/512MB RAM
and an Athlon 900/512MB RAM

I have no complaints. I'd like faster rigs for better cracking ability.. but these work absolutely fine despite their aging speeds for cracking times.

P4 1.8, 512mb ram, 18" flatpanel display :)

Haha, I have the best work system here :)

They do force me to use lotus notes, though.

Who runs your IT dept and can I have his job? The domain controllers can be some of the weakest machines on the network.
Who needs all that power for a DC? Is it also the Exchange server, SMS Server, NAV server and Oracle server?
