someone put a disco ball on top of this tower at Cornell and the school spent 25k to take it down. obviously it shouldn't have cost this much and there are definitely better ways to take it down than renting a crane that they claimed cost 8k. stupid bureaucracy, stupid idiots running a school, *cough* i mean business

I would've taken it down for a six pack and ammo cost. Guess they didn't get my proposal.

Blame OSHA. My bet: The school was covering it's ass by making sure the job was done safely and according to safety regulations.

that's why Bucknell > * ;)

stupid crap happened at my school too. the school spent like $50k for a piece of "art" (and I use that term loosely) that consisted of sticks and pvc pipe. the students were so upset, they tore it down.

yeah we don't have anything to tear down here. and i know if the students destroy anything, it will just hike up the tuition even more. i only have another year here, a long one at that... oh god save me.

I would have just paid one of the overworked and suicidal design students to climb up there and jump off the tower with the disco ball.

Here at Duke, the school got some "Spanish benches" for $8k apiece. They're not really any more comfortable than regular benches. In fact, the student-built benches here provide far more seating and we only spend like ~$300 to $500 for lumber from the local Home Depot. Crazy!

Rice has a similiar story. We are named for William Marsh Rice, guy that donated heaps of cash to build the place, and his earthly remains are under the base of this big statue of him in our main academic quad. Really, really heavy thing. Anywho, some MechE's from Wiess (one of the residential colleges here) build an A-frame and spent some time trying various things till they could turn a car around in place no problem, then they went to Willie's statue and rotated it 180 degrees. (poor man has his grave desecrated all the time)

The school, of course, wanted it back the way it was, so they hired a construction company to come out and make it right. Big crane, etc. etc., but the kicker is this: they bent one of the 4 pins the statue sits over so the statue was out for about a month as the repaired the base to some ridiculous price tag. It took the students about an hour to do the original turn.

cornell dorms buy chairs for 800 dollars each, suppose to be fireproof. and guess what, they are not. i just don't understand why all this money is wasted when they could have gone to better uses.
