I don't post much in Hot Deals...so hopefully I'm following protocol well enough.

Anyway, check out this thread over at Dpreview. Link is to my post, search through other posts for other necessary info.

Would just like to mention that the promo code for the USA online checkout still works. I just got the upgrade-download for ...$36, plus 2-years download insurance for $4 = ~$40 total.

Plus they're giving a few other programs for free with the order. I probably won't use them but here's the total order list and final price:

Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 Upgrade Download $59.99 - $23.99
Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 2 Year Download Insurance $7.99 - $3.20
Ulead DVD MovieFactory 6 Download $49.99 (Free)

MediaOne Plus for Paint Shop Pro Photo Download $39.99 (Free - though wasn't advertised/mentioned until after purchase)

Individual Retail Subtotal: 157.96
Final Price: $40.79

Total Discount: $117.17

Weird....looking through that thread though, it seems it's been working off and on for no reason. I guess YMMV.

Well, hopefully it might work for someone.

Would just like to mention that apparently since Corel PSP X1, they've been silently installing a license check service called ProtexisLicensing.

From Wikipedia:
Spyware allegations:
Versions XI to X4 install a third party program named PSIService.exe, listed under Windows services as ProtexisLicensing. Written by Protexis, this runs in the background and collects licensing information. This program communicates with a remote host[citation needed] and is described in some posts as spyware. The Corel EULA does not reveal that installation of Version XI or X2 will result in the installation and continued background execution of this non-Corel program. Uninstalling XI will not uninstall PSIService.exe; and upon manually disabling the Protexis Licensing service, Corel Paint Shop Pro will cease functioning.

This sucks...obviously. It's totally invasive and shitty (of course I didn't bother to read the EULA though). But I love the program (been using PSP since version 9....actually, I remember holding on to an non-expiring evaluation copy of version 3 for years...1995? ).

So I searched and found a work around from here.
Solution how to avoid ProtexisLicensing service after patching with 11.11 Patch:

Install PSP 11.00 and normaly license the program.
Go to program dir and find PSIKey.dll and backup it somewhere. [edit: I found this file in /Windows/System32]

Now install Patch 11.11
After patch with PSP 11.11 in program directory remove PsiClient.dll [edit: PsiClient.dll exists in /Program Files/Corel/Paint Shop Pro Photo X2]
and replace with backuped PSIKey.dll and rename it into PsiClient.dll

Then go to Administrative Tools -> Services and stop ProtexisLicensing
(or just press Start-> Run -> services.msc and press Enter)
Stop the service and put on Disable.

Go to Strat-> Run -> sc delete ProtexisLicensing
and press Enter, now ProtexisLicensing will be removed from services list

Go to SYSTEM32 folder and delete this files:
- PSIService.exe
- PSIKey.dll

I tried it and can confirm the method works with version X2 (patched to 12.01). I didn't delete any files, instead I just renamed the extensions and then simply disabled the ProtexisLicensing service.

edit:
FWIW, here's a post detailing what Corel said in response to that user's request for information:

Hi,

I stumbled across this thread today and thought you guys might be interested to read the brief response I received from Corel Support on 31 January 2007:

"The PSIService provides the minimal required administrative access to Corel product licensing and registration information in accordance with the new Windows Vista (tm) operating system guidelines. This service does not access any data other than the Corel product licensing and registration information, and it will not have any negative effects on your computer."

Hmm!?

Like the rest of you, I don't feel at all happy about this and, in fact, at the time posted my feelings at Avsim.com in their Hanger Chat Forum.

Sadly, this is yet another example of what is currently happening in the digital world. Legit customers are now being treated as potential thieves and certainly with little or no respect.

I contacted Corel about PSP and Painter sold on ebay. They said OEM software need an accompanying hardware otherwise it violates their treaties. I mean it's ridiculous how cheap they're going on ebay which alarmed me whether these are bootlegs or legit. They appear to be but most are not being sold with an accompanying hardware.

If only Photoshop Elements 6 was $30 I would get it now. I found it to be more responsive with better controls; better drop shadow controls; precise marquee creation. GIMP is utter crap. PSP is worth $30 over GIMP most definitely.
