I bet after pricing out Core 2 Quad and i7 systems you would only be $150 apart - 8% to 10% more. Not that much to have the newest stuff.

It's when upgrading a system, with just CPU, mobo & ram, that i7 seems so much more expensive.

Well, you said that your budget is around $2500, right? That's $1250 if you divide it into two parts. Consider this... You can build a VERY nice core2 system right now for this amount(yes, that's with a monitor), and two years later you can build another powerful i7 or better system for another $1250. 😉 Mind you it will probably not be the best of the best, but it will be very competitive, and will probably run at least 90-99% of all games out there.


Off course all this is purely IMO - I'm just giving you another opinion.

I recommend i7, in my opinion its just not worth buying last years technology.
