core2 duo system over heats constantly

Hello I just built a new system up using a core2 duo cpu with its retail heatsink along with an intel mobo in an aopen case. The problem I am having however is it will not run for more then a minute or less at a time as it will shutoff do to the cpu termal protection triggering and shuting the system off.

The processor is the 2.4ghz 10066mhz fsb module with the retail heatsink.
Then the motherboard is a Intel DP965LT.

I did have a hard time during the heatsink install getting it to latch into the motherboard properly and doing so I might have messed up the thermal paste because i had to lift it slightly off the processor to realign the thing. I'm hoping thats the case so I'm going to go pick up some thermal paste tomorrow from Compusa to apply to heatsink. Does anyone have any recommendations on what to get?

The other thing I'm thinking is maybe there is a threshold setting on the mobo's bios for cpu heat and its set to low. Not sure if intel does this though with their motherboards.

that happened to me, remount it. although its bad practice you can reuse that same paste until you find some more, those pins are a bitch. make sure they are all 100% in otherwise itll overheat and shut down.

I don't know what Intel was thinking when they designed the LGA775 mounting mechanism.

Ive had the same problems many times, in fact, have received calls from clients complaining the computer was rebooting only to find the SFH had come undone on one of the corners.

More likely not seated properly over you messing up the thermal pad. I removed the thermal pad from my retail E6400 HSF to apply AS5. But I decided to see how well it would work without any thermal paste at all. The CPU would reach 85C and it would throttle. The CPU did not force the system to shutdown though.

That's what my guess would be. If just running hot, will throttle as mentioned, but shutting down is more serious. The other possibilities are if the fan isn't running (if it's in a case w/o side window you may never notice), or the fan isn't plugged into the "CPU fan" location. Some boards need to detect a fan RPM on it or else will shut down. Have you watched temperatures in BIOS to see if it's actually going up right before shutting down?

This is a classic case of not having the heatsink/fan properly attached. You gotta have all four corners locked down.

It sounds like the thermal pad is AFU since the mounting using that is a onw shot deal. Take it off, clean off the thermal pad with alcohol, then use thermal paste and mount it properly. It will be fine.

And yes I agree the 775 Intel mounting hardware is crap and hard to get to stay on.

The LGA775 socket is fine. Forget bent pins anyone? :) It's the crappy box processor HSF mounting design. Those plastic pins are a PITA to get locked properly.

the stock heatsink probably isn't getting very good contact with the cpu, just save yourself some headache and get a third party cooler like a big typhoon or scythe infinity

Don't forget that with the conroe, the temp sensor is directly on the chip so you can reach 70 celsius easily at full load, without any problems.

I suggest you to read the first paragraph of this page

Personally, I had no problems with the stock fan (same cpu), but I agree, it was difficult to know if the pin was correctly locked.

How is the scythe infinity gonna help when it uses the exact same mounting system as the retail C2D hsf?

LEARN TO INSTALL A HSF FOR CHRIST SAKE. Or pay some nerd next door $20 to install it for you.
