Core i7 920 Safe Overclock - All settings Auto?

Hey guys,

I had trouble OC'ing manually inputting the numbers.

I kept getting a shut off on "Exit Saving Changes" and then it reset by itself with the monitor not turning on. I then manually re-powered and it POST'ed to "Overclockfail". I was inputting standard settings that others have successfully used with the same CPU and MOBO.

So eventually all I did was just put BLCK to 160 and everything else as it was and it worked. My temps are 33-38 idle and Prime95 64 bit ran fine for a half an hour.

Using:

920
P6T Asus Delxue
Windows 64 bit home premium


CPU-Z settings:

core voltage: 1.232
bus speed - 160
multiplier - 20
QPI Link - 2880

DRAM Freq- 480
FSBRAM 2:6

NB Freq 2560 mhz




Is there anything potentially dangerous wrong with this? Anyway to get QPI to 6.4 GT/s like the 965?

can you give us more details about your setup? RAM? CPU Cooler? etc...

Turbo is turned off.

As in my Signature:

I tried a variety of manual ram and QPI settings which also did not POST properly so I'm not sure.

Asside from heat failure, which shouldn't occur well into the mid 3GHz range even on the worst chip, most of the overclocking failures in Core i7 systems are RAM related, since the safe operating range for memory voltage is on the low side.

Remember, i7 has a TON of memory bandwidth, besides, RAM probably ought to be at 1066MHz to run asynchronously with the CPU. I would loosen timings, somewhere around Cas 9, and see how it goes.

u are never suposed to set auto.

because sometimes the board will uber overvolt your overclock.

This is why your suposed to go into bios and at least manually set:

Vcore
QPI Dram voltage
QPI bus voltage (VTT)
and PLL

Good point.

I'll manually set the defaults then myself rather than leaving them on auto.
