Core i7 920 @ 3.8ghz (VS.) Core i7 965 Extreme

ummmmm

ur debating on getting a 965....

At that point get a 920 + water.

Ive have the 920, 965, and 975.

If the 965 is clocked at 3.8 - it should be just the same ..
If it's clocked lower - the 920 will beat it ...

In pocket-book benchmarks, the 920 is a clear winner...

I was wondering if there's some clear numbers here for this comparison:

920 @ 3.8ghz

VS.

965 (Stock)

Thanks,
Chim

Since they are the same architecture and assuming QPI is set to 6.4GT/s on the 920, then the overclocked 920 will beat the stock 965, everything else being equal.

Does the extreme have the multiplier unlocked? If so (as that would be the only reason for ever buying an extreme series) it will overclock quite a bit higher than anything you can push from a 920. If you're willing to OC the 920 and not the 965, there is no point in not buying the 920. You can put it under water cooling and still have money left over and a beautiful OC.

thats not a fair comparision.

How about

965 @ 4.1 - 4.2 ghz

vs

920 @ 3.8ghz.

That would be about fair seeing how those are the average clocks for the respected cpu's.

then again your looking at EE chips, so why not consider this little puppy.

975 gobbles all.

Aigo, is right that you are not comparing apples with apples.

You would have to be crazy to pay 3-4x the price of the 920 for the 965 (or 975 🙂) and not overclock it. Otherwise what the hell is the point of buying a chip with unlocked multipliers (whilst still keeping the Intel warranty valid), when the much cheaper 920 overclocks beyond the stock 965/975?

A friend of mine has one in her Alienware system. Runs at 3.2G (stock). She plays Bejeweled and Second Life on it!

Also it was shipped with SLI disabled!

Isn't that over kill to play Bejewelled and Second Life? 😀

Funnily enough, my mum played Bejewelled 2 for 8 Hours straight when we went on holiday flying on the A380 between Singapore and Sydney. Her score was over 300,000 (I'm not sure if this is good or bad; she isn't much of a gamer).

She said dual graphics cards were a requirement with a 30" monitor. Of course she's running 1280x800. I asked why and she said she likes everything big like her men!
