core i3 2100 for low resolution gaming?

In another thread i posted about how i believed this 9150e amd athlon x4 was bottlenecking a 6770 at 1280x1024,the general consensus was the cpu was majorly holding me back.

Due to budget constraints,i am not considering a i5 at this moment.

Is there any gamers who run the i3 2100 or a similiar chip at 1368x768 or lower resolution in such games as BF3 who have ran into any major bottlenecking with mid range to lower end video cards such as the 6770 or 6850?

Usually the cpu is the major factor at lower resolutions and while i know a i3 2100 is plenty at higher resolutions,the cpu tends to be tasked just a bit more at lower resolutions.

can't say for but i have a FX 4100 and i play BF3 at 1280x720 just fine so a i3-2100 would be fine to ?

It's the best budget CPU for what you want. I would highly recommend spending the extra $5 and getting the i3-2120, however.

Like you said, CPU performance is accentuated at lower resolution, and that's the fastest CPU under $130.

actually not entirely true as the Phenom II 965 BE is $109

The Intel® Core® i3-2120 with your budget is about the best I can think of but you also might look at the Intel Core i3-2125 which the Intel HD 3000 Graphics over the HD 2000.

The Core i3-2120 is faster than the Phenom II X4 965. That includes gaming.

For BF3 i would go with the FX6100 (OC to 4.2GHz or above) over the Core i3, you will have all the CPU performance you will need for the HD6770 and 6850 or even a higher end GPU.

that means spending money on a cpu cooler too. at that point he might as well just spend a little more and get an i5. that will give him the same or better overall performance while using less power.

I have an extra computer which I use to play Eve Online at 1920x1080. It has an I3 2100 and a GT440 and 8GB of Ram. I run the game at highest settings and it runs at over 80FPS. Not a bad processor if you ask me.

The machine that is receiving this swap is a gateway dx series case,so any high voltage overclocking will be turning this tower into a furnace.

Have not really looked into what kinda wattage this 9150e puts out,but i imagine the i3 2100 pulls similar if not near the same or lower,and the temps being pulled from inside the oem case are in my comfort zone.

Basically building a simple gaming pc that will do 1280x1024 for now on this lcd,then 1368x768 later on a 720 t.v.

The OP mentioned discrete graphics cards, so the IGP does not matter in this instance.

Indeed. I think if you're coupling it with a 6850 or equivalent, you may as well save a few dollars and get yourself a G530. For 720p, I don't think you're going to see a hell of a lot of difference between a G530, G630 or i3-2100 with a discrete card.

7850 is powerful enough to play 1080p for majority of games maxed, especially once overclocked.

I would go for the IB 3470 and H77

Getting a 2500 was really not a good decision. For $10 less you can get a 3570 which is 5-10% faster, consumes less power, and has support for PCIe 3.0 (for what it's worth). Those extra $10 could be used perhaps on a better motherboard.

Oh well.

Having owned a i7 3770k,a 2600k and even a 2500k before,i found the ivy bridge chips put off a little more heat then i would like,cause of their smaller die cores and what not and the sandys not so much.

Since i am using a oem case,i much prefer the cooler core sandy offers over the hotter ivy since i will be using the stock cooler as well.

IB put out LESS heat, it just operates at higher temps. You will have no problems with IB and your OEM case.
