I am planning to get a laptop Dell Inspiron 9400

It's a core duo and I heard about battery issues and a fix but still not too sure if it's really fixed..?

I am not in big hurry to get it so I am also wondering if I should wait till Merom comes to market..?

Cheers :)

I thought it was a Windows XP issue that drained the battery when a USB device was plugged in? In fact, I'm pretty sure of it. And yes, there is a fix from MS.

But, Merom isn't due out until the end of the year.

Merom is due in October, I heard, and should be a much better long term investment than the current Yonah Core Duo.

you could always buy Yonah laptop and replace it with Merom. But Merom really isn't that much better, supposedly 20% clock for clock with the same power consumption. Might as well jsut get the Yonah, its the best thatthere will be for the next 6 months, and Merom isn't gonna kill it too bad, so you won't be too bad off having it.

I got a decent PC at home and my current job doesn't require a laptop so I reckon I can wait if its worth it.

True that is but I am also looking for 64 bit rather than 20% clock speed improvement.

Merom WILL be 64bits, the question is: can you wait 'till Q4? If not then getting an Turion X2 in a couple of months is your best bet. If you can wait it out then wait, at the very least you'll see lower prices on dual-core laptops by then.

Get the Duo because as soon as Merom comes out, there will be something better and it will never stop. You will wait all your life. The damn core duo just came out for god sakes.

I agree with Shenkoa completely. The Core Duo in my new Mac Mini is a SCREAMER and is an amazing chip. As for 64-bit vs. 32-bit, I still find it hilarious that people really think 64 bit is really such a "must-have." If you need more than 4 gigs of RAM in your laptop, then wait by all means. If not, then 64-bit shouldn't be something to wait until Q4 '06 for. The 20% performance increase is something I'd be more interested in since I personally have no need for more than 4 gigs.

If you don't need more than 4 gigs of RAM, buy a laptop with a Core Duo that is available today and enjoy it. The Core Duo is definitely not going to disappoint from a performance standpoint.

64bit mean nothing, its just a marketing tool. I find it very unlikely that you really need a 64bit CPU on a laptop, last I checked I don't think you gave even get more than 4MB of RAM into a laptop, and if it is technically possible its still completely unnescecarry. IF you say you want a 64bit CPU I would really hope you have a good list of 64bit application that you have to run on your laptop, because otherwise its not even worth mentioning. People think Intels marketing is good for getting people to buy into the MHz myth, but imo AMD has done even better by getting people who have never run a 64bit application to think they need a 64bit CPU.

I'd say wait until Merom is released to buy a Yonah laptop. You'll get the same product you're looking at now at a much lower price. Merom will push Yonah's value down.

For god's sake people, if he says he needs 64-bits then he needs it, period. Just because you dont find any use for it does not mean other people are the same. And yes, even future proofing for 64bits is worth it if he desires it.

To OP: If you dont need the laptop right now then you can always wait for Turion X2s and Merom to be released, but if you do need it ASAP then you dont really have much of a choice. Personally I think that whichever CPU you chose will perform marvelously, though I'm inclined to recommend current Core Duos because I have yet to see a power consumption benchmark for the Turion X2 or Merom.

Does he want 64-bit because he's been told it's "so much better than 32-bit!" Or does he desire 64 bit for a huge program that requires 5 gigs of RAM at a minimum to run? My post was to point out that 64-bit is hype for 99% of the general public. I clearly stated if he needs something that 64-bit offers, then he should wait.

"Future proofing" is a great sales pitch, as is the sales pitch that 64-bit offers noteworthy speed increases.
