core duo (Dell) vs Turion (HP, Acer, and etc)

I have been using the Dell Latitude D810 (Pentium M), which I got through my school's laptop leasing program, for a year. I like its performance but I need to purchase a laptop on my own now. After browsing through various online sources, there seem to be two options for laptop CPUs--Core Duo and Turion. I know that Turion is 64 bit capable (good for the upcoming 64bit Windows Vista) but it is probably not as suitable for a laptop as the Core Duo since Intel has lot more experiences in building low wattage laptop processors.

Assume everything else being equal ( similar graphic card, sound chip, memory, and hard drive), which laptop should I get--Core Duo or Turion? Please keep in mind that I am not a gamer. I used my laptop mainly for academics and for personal pleasures such as photo editing (amatuer photography), watch videos(Divx/xvid), and burning dvds.

Another thing I need help to decide is laptop LCD option. My current laptop's 15.4" LCD can do 1680 x 1050 (with fairly sharp text and wide viewing angles). Dell offers wxga, wsxga, and wuxga while other manufacturers offer mainly wxga and wsxga. It seems that my current laptop probably has a wsxga. I read lots documents (pdf and powerpoint slides) on my laptop. Is it worth it to get a wuxga LCD? If neither wuxga nor wsxga is available, will a wxga LCD suffice?

Core Duo laptops are Merom Compatible, so 64bit arguement is moot.

As for Wuxga, 1900x1200 on a 15.4" screen... yea... you better have godly vision.

What do you mean by Merom Compatible? so, Core Duo can actually run Windows Vista 64 bit? Please show me a website which shows Core Duo laptop running
Windows Vista 64 bits. I thought the main advantage that Core 2 Duo has over Core Duo is 64 bit capability.

What does ftw mean? Are you recommending Core Duo over Turion?

Guys, I know that higher resolution will allow the computer to display more things at once because smaller icons and etcs but what makes one LCD sharper (in displaying text)than another? In another word, what should I be looking for in the LCD specification list if I want to buy a laptop that can display ultra sharp text?

Thanks in advance.

I noticed that changing the LCD's default resolution to another definitely blurs the text or graphic.

Merom = mobile Conroe, Core 2 Duo

Almost all current Core Duo laptops using the 945p chipset is Merom compatible. Meaning you can drop in a Core2Duo at any time to replace your CoreDuo. The boys at XS have done this with multiple laptops (including the desktop iMac-Mini).

So, the Core 2 Duo is out already? Why haven't the manufacturers made any Core 2 Duo laptop yet?

It's not out yet, he's just trying to tell you that while core duo isn't 64bit, once merom is out, you will be able to replace the core duo, with a merom(core 2 duo) before vista even comes out so there is no point worrying about the 64bit.

The core duo's are great I have an HP Pavillion dv1680ca, the performance is great, I'm not a gamer and i bought it for work-related needs, but becareful, most of the core duo's have express expansion slots, this is a problem if you would like to run "truley wireless" oh sure the wi-fi ( tri mode 802.11) works great, for networking, but to run wireless you need an air card, have fun finding an air card that fits into a pci-e slot, I bought it two weeks ago and have been banging my head against a wall try to find a way to fit a "square peg into a round slot" so to speak, If running "True Wireless" is not a big deal then go for it, however i myself am not a fan of Dell, niether are many others i have spoken to thier customer service is shody to say the least, and around here the only way to get one is to order it online ( or by phone) in this day and age of identity thieft credit cards and the internet are a gamble, plus they are expensive, you can get the same options, for cheaper from another company Asus has good solid pruducts and is one of the industry leaders in mobo's, My HP came with a T2400 ( 1.8ghz) 1024mb ram(DDR2), 100gb HD (SATA) DVD +/- RW W/lightscribe ect...for $1600.00 CAN it is agood deal. In Dell defense the are one of the only companies that ship an O.S. disk with the unit and most of the software comes on disk with it too
. **** Forgot to add the HP is also Vista Ready****
