I am installing the Retail HS in my new 6400 core 2 rig. I tried to look around for answers on this.

If I use AS5 will the HS mount tight against the chip? or does the thermal tape need to be used because it is thicker?

I dont want to messup and have to get more termal tape, and I do know NOT to use both thermal tape and AS5.

Even though I am doing a stock rig, I am thinking about taking off all HS and using AS5 on North and south bridge on a Gigabyte 965-S3

As long as you use one or the other, not both, it should be fine. AS5 is a better choice if you are looking to overclock, but in that case a better HS would be warranted as well.

If it makes you feel better use AS5 but the difference between it and properly applied std. TIM is almost unmeasurable. (between 0-2 degrees depending on the review).

However throwing out the stock HSF and going with a high end aftermarket HSF can get you a much better gain but for modest overclocking at stock Vcore the factory setup will work just fine.

ok thats good to hear, I just did not want to have the problem someone ran into with a vid card where he removed the tape and tried to AS5 it and their was a huge gap because it was made to have tape not AS5.

I also picked up a Connect3D x1900xt, do you think that I should AS5 that or is it the same thing as the CPU HS where I will only get minimal changes.

If you plan on running @ stock speeds, I wouldn't see the reason for it. And even if you plan on OC'ing, you'd be better off replacing the entire HSF to begin with. AS5, or no AS5, its mostly the HS itself that'll make or break an OC anyway. As for the X1900XT, I'd leave it as it is. They run hot, and not ever having to deal with Connect3D, I'm not aware of how nit picky they are with after market modding if the card were to have to be RMA'd. I'd only do after market modding to the X1900XT if its really hot or you plan on OC'ing it.

Lol, if you're lucky like me, your wife can't tell the difference between low settings and 30 fps and high settings and 100 fps :)

But yeah, I went with AS5 on my E6400 with no issue. Idle temps are ~30 and under load 42-45.
