Is it worth upgrading to a ddr3 motherboard for core 2 systems ? looking for a cheap alternative to going i7 for now but i dont intend to go for i5... so is it worthwile to get a ddr3 board and some ddr3 that i can utilize in a later build ?

The DDR3 motherboards will certainly help you make use of your Core 2 Duo/Quad processors for a while longer. It will probably be a few more years before the 775 socket is phased out and the 1366 socket is completely embraced in the technology world. I would look for a good deal and try to pick up a board or two. The whole Core i7 hype isn't exactly to be expected, unless you have a multi-threaded program/software that will effectively use all 8 processing threads.

Save your money and stick with 775 for a while. By then all of the Core i7 prices (CPU, mobo, RAM) will have fallen in price.

and go where... i7 too expensive for me for now but if i stuck with skt 775 i'd get a nice boost in performance and still keep my budget intact:

proposed parts:

ram

board

Cpu

those parts are less than $ 300 so as you can see unless i can eat something i7ish for sub $400 this is the route for now... if you have any suggestions please feel free as i am open for some.

I would save some more money and go for i7 when you can afford it, that will provide you with more longevity then a 775 board with ddr3.

What exactly do you use your system for? Any reason you need 2x2GB RAM? I understand why you want to upgrade the CPU (which your mobo supports), but why the mobo and RAM?

primarily gaming but do a few video encodes for my friends also lots of zipping files but just cant afford that i7 now 600 bucks is the cheapest i can go i7 with and i really cant see that much these days... as much as i'd love to just go with the flow and get like a 4870 and chill i think the ddr3 will be just good for moving along or should i jsut get the card and get i7 for christmas ?

I would go with the VGA and/or CPU upgrade. If you want to do video encoding faster, make the move to a 775 quad. Skipping on the DDR3 and a new mobo will allow you to hold out longer and wait for prices to drop.

I believe the DDR2 you're running can do DDR2 1000 @ 5-5-5-15(mine did), that would leave plenty of headroom @ 1:1 ratio. Not much of a chance you'll hit 500FSB with the 2200 or the 7400. If you're worried, get some cheap DDR2-1066. On a side note, to improve overall system response, you may want to think about a hdd upgrade, how old are those 80GB WD?

Why go DDR3 at all? Get 8GB of DDR2 for a Core 2 system. By the time that isn't enough, you'll likely be able to get an i7 or its successor.

DDR3 is still a waste. If you were asking this question a few years ago it would sound like this:

"I have a P4 and DDR rRAM, should I upgrade to a Pentium 5xx and 2 GB DDR2 533 for hundreds of dollars?"

The answer then and now is the same. No. By the time you can use the DDR3 in a new computer you won't want to. You'll want the new faster high density RAM that costs $10/GB. Keep the DDR2 and use the cash on a new CPU (Q6600 and the like are ~$160) and a 4850. You'll get more life from it.
