It requires a high FSB to get decent clockspeed, but its a little faster clock for clock compared to the 65nm quads.

You'll most likely be motherboard limited rather then chip limited.
 
I picked one up, couldn't resist the price. Running fine in my IP35-E with the 18 BIOS. Just under 3GHz with no change in vcore. May have a E7200 that I ran at 3.8 for sale soon.

My brother has an Abit IP35-E mobo which currently has a E4500, any idea if a Q8200 will work? Since, they're out of the mobo business, I doubt they have come out with any recent bios updates.[/quote]

Abit's IP35-Pro is still the best motherboard in recent memory. Flawless layout, legacy free, great overclocker, no gimmicks (4 phase PWM). And I don't think I need to point out how amazing uGuru's BIOS fan control is. It's absolutely disgusting how bad other motherboards are in that aspect.
 
Yeah, I can't complain about the IP35-E to much, been a great board for me. OC'd an E2160 to 3.0, E7200 to 3.8 and now the Q8200, think I paid $67 for it.

Yeah, I have a IP35-Pro with a Q9550. I'm happy with the set-up.

The BIOSes are somewhat quirky. I know BIOS 14 was the last IP35-Pro release oriented toward 65nm Core 2s like my Q6600. I tried BIOS 17 and beta 18, but the droop on the older CPUs was scary.

The BIOSes are somewhat quirky. I know BIOS 14 was the last IP35-Pro release oriented toward 65nm Core 2s like my Q6600. I tried BIOS 17 and beta 18, but the droop on the older CPUs was scary.

It was meant towards brencat who has a IP35-E board and the latest bios for that mb is 18(which allows 45mm cpus).
 
Think it's worth it over my E3110 (E8400) at 4.0 ghz? I'm thinking I should just wait until i7 prices drop and build a new rig in a year or so.

This chip has a locked 7x multipler.....expect 3ghz, and no where near 4! If you run quad apps, yes. If not, no.
 
Thanks OP, was able to get an order in because they restocked. It's been a while since I kept up with computer items... does raising the CPU FSB/mhz cause an increase in the ram speed (or are they unlinked these days)? Well better Q, what speed ram do I need to look for to get the say 3ghz overclock?

Most recent motherboard have a memory divider or unlinking option, you should be able to raise the FSB without pushing the memory too hard.

With a 2.00 FSB:RAM multiplier (the lowest supported, equal to 1:1), then with FSB of 400Mhz, you would need DDR2-800 RAM.

The chip natively uses FSB 333, which is equal to DDR2-667.

I've definitely enjoyed my board for sure, no complaints. But no doubt bios support has been hit or miss over the years. Abit always had fantastic engineers, but the 3rd stringers on the bios development team hurt their efforts, IMO.

FYI, bios 16 for the IP35-E was the best for 65nm CPUs, followed by 14 beta 05. Won't need to flash to 18 unless I go with 45nm, but given I'm at 3.6ghz now on my E6750 (which I recently bought new for a song), I doubt I'll have to. Will probably just jump to the next generation...probably some time in 2010.

That is exactly what i linked it to. My DDR2 800 is being pushed to DDR2 830 without a problem.

I set it to 400bus (2.8ghz) and it is at 100% load with no voltage increase. Default voltage is 1.2125 and 1.152 at 100% load. Stable so far even with the vDroop.

Core temps are: 69 65 71 65

I am using a larger OEM Intel Quad core copper HSF with a bolt down kit.

Not sure I will bother to go any higher. This bus speed slots nicely with my DDR2-800.

LOL, SimCity 3000 is the most intense game I play....and the 6600gt plays it at the highest settings, with full AA turned on. SimCity has AA right?? 😀

Honestly, I have no use for the 9600gt in my other rig. Hell, to be honest, I have no use for a quad core either.

I got hooked on pc hardware in '99 after my first build, and have never looked back!! Sad, but I have boxes just sitting around, and I'm looking to build an itx rig for no reason!

I have the same problem with dirt bikes. 🙂
 
I got the one on the lower right hand corner, it was giving me the wink wink.

It works ok, but my current board doesn't like to go above 360, I'll keep my q6600 in there and give it to my sister.
