I want to get a laptop for school (macbook) and I was wondering if I should hold out until the Core 2 Duos come out, specifically for the Macs. Any chance that would be by the end of August?
 
Rumour has it that Apple and Dell will get first dibs. I've even heard "Apple first" though it may not be Conroe, but ... aaugh.... the other one. Smithfield? Argh.

Every bit as good, but more.... laptop chip, rather than desktop. IIRC.

Besides.... it's pure speculation. Apple has done a good job keeping their lips shut tight. They don't want another slip-up like they did when they released ATI data too soon! ATI almost pulled all Apple support forever over that one!

Merom. Smithfield is a Pentium D.

Intel's press releases have said Core 2 Duo laptops would be available by the end of the month, though how true that is is still not completely certain.
