I have the 6400 that I built and have a question on how hot it should get. It is at 46C at idle. I tried putting on the good old arctic silver 5 but it is running at 46C. Is that normal. This is my first C2D.
If you are not overclocked that is a tad high, but nothing to be overly concerned with. You should be more concerned with high load temps than idle temps.
Don't forget that your board could also be reporting temps incorrectly. Make sure you have the latest BIOS.
I'd say that's a little hot. I wouldn't run any higher than 60C myself.
If you back off the oc a bit, you could probably drop the voltage considerably, and that would help the temps quite a bit.
*edit* What are you using to measure temps? Coretemp and Intel's thermal analysis tool are the programs used around here to measure temps. Keeps everybody on the same page.
