Are Athlon 64 X2 processors equal to Intel Core 2 Duo machines?

Also on the Athlon side are 939 socket processors being phased out? Hard to find in stores and only two available on Newegg.

I just got a machine with a Intel Core 2 Duo E4300 (1.80GHz, 800MHz FSB, 2MB L2 Cache). What Athlon processor would be equal to that?

i think thats the x2 AM2 4600+

oh ok, thanks. I got this Gateway Machine but i'm going to return it. Probably get a Dell instead.

Depends on the software. In average the C2d 4300 is an equivalent of the X2 4200+.

software do you mean Operating system? If so Vista Premium. I got this Gateway Machine on Sunday, but i'm not liking it and going to return it. I'll get another Vista Machine but probably from Dell. On Dell's site it seems that the lowest price machines come with Athlon X2 processors.

So an Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Dual Core would be much lower in quality? I can get a dell machine fitting my budget of $600 with that processor.

It would be slower, but the 3800+ is still a processor of good quality.

Most normal users -- especially those buying complete, brand name systems -- are not going to notice huge differences between an AMD or an Intel chip. Gamers, hard core enthusiasts and people overclocking/running benchies will notice a difference.

Yeah, I don't need that. My overclocking and game playing days on a computer are over. I just want the Windows Aero interface and edit some pictures here and there and just and normal user stuff.
for the Windows Aero I already have a PCI-E video card that i'm going to install on the system.
Unfortunately with the Gateway system which i returned already it would do Aero but not on a 21" widescreen monitor.
