Core 2 Duo AMD X2 FX Opteron Video Encoding Comparison

Hi I am new to the forums, I have been reading for some time but have yet to post. I am currently in the market to upgrade my PC. I have a A64 3000 right now and am looking at either going Core 2 duo or maybe AMD X2 dpending on what is the better overall setup. I think I have seen just about every benchmark there is on the internet in terms of comparison results between the two. But as far as real world comparisons I had yet to see anything real until I saw the Photoshop test thread. Needless to say the results seem farily interesting in that some of the larger advantages that C2D stuff had over AMD X2 stuff in the benchmarks does not seem as clear in the photoshop test. I understand that there are a lot of other things that photoshop does and certain things make work better or worse depending on the setup but I wondered if possible if a test could be setup for some type of video encoding.

I do some video encoding on my machine and I was interested in what kind of real world results a test would show. I use various things like DVD decyrpter and DVD ripper as well as DVD shrink and I wondered if any of those programs would be easy to setup a test for everbody with. I don't have a ton of experience setting something like this up as far as what sample file to use or what program to set it up with as related to what will provide the best comparison. I would be happy to do the leg work in setting it up but I thought maybe getting some advice would be better first. Or if this is super easy for someone to set up by all means post it up and lets give it a try.

Any ideas or thoughts?

Thanks for any help

I would like to see the results as well, but i would go ahead and say that under no conditions are you really cpu limited in photoshop.

It sounds interesting, but I don't have nay clue what software you'd be looking to use as a comparison. I do have both an X2 3800+ and a C2D E6400.

I was not sure either what software to use but basically they is anything and everything available at www.doom9.org They have all of the common DVD ripping tools as well as encoding for DivX and MPEG 4 utilities as well to download. So it would be a matter of just picking what software to use as a comparison like for instance say DivX and then the final part would be figuering out what piece of sample video that everyone can get access to would be used for the test.

I guess I am just throwing out ideas I am not really sure if this would be the best way to get real world results.

Didn't try stock speeds, but using AutoGK 1.96 to encode lord of the rings FOTR, took 49 minutes 4 seconds with my E6600 @3.1ghz, 1h 5m with my X2 4200+ @2.618ghz(raid-0 knocked off a couple minutes, 1h 8m with single drive).

I don't have any screenies of this unfortunately, but i do a bit of DVD9 to DVD5 conversion occasionally ;)

I use DVD-RB + CCE 5-pass.

Anyway, on my former Opteron 165 @ 2.6 GHz, it'd usually take 200-250 minutes for the encoding job to be done.
I've only done three thus far on my C2D E6400 @ 3.4 GHz, but they've all taken about 120 minutes.

That's half the time :D

Half the time is just sick :D

@n7

Great results with your new rig.

I keep hearing the IDE controller on the P5B Deluxe caused REAL slow transfer i.e. ripping speed from the DVD player to the HD. Care to comment on this?

:)

Actually, ripping seemed okay to me.

But burning seems slower.

I could just be imagining this, but it seems 8x on my old system was almost as fast as 12x on this one.

Thanks, coming from you I know it's real reliable and trustworthy.

I noticed that after some really serious evaluation you went with the P5B Deluxe. Any regrets about not waiting for C2 stepping?

I am on the edge. Should I or shouldn't I go ahead? I do not NEED a new desktop but the lure of new hardware is maddening.

Thanks for some of the different results. It seems to be kind of like I expected. I expected an advantage for C2D stuff vs comparible X2 stuff I just was not sure how much. I mean to me its a matter of how much time saved do I want to pay for. Like is it worth it for me to pay for 20 seconds better for a C2D setup vs the AMD or not. I can understand if its like 100% faster but 10% or something like that is not really worth it for myself at least.

Any other results that anybody else has?

I understand where you are coming from HUSKY55 its been pretty difficult for me lately trying to figure out what setup to go with as well as if I should just wait another couple of months or jump in now.

Well, i actually didn't know what a C2 stepping was until i looked up what you mentioned.
Never heard of it till now actually :(

I don't regret buying when i did.

I don't really like waiting to enjoy things, & i can't really see a C2 965 being all that much better than my current mobo is.

Sure, it has some glitches, but nothing major.

Only thing that angers me is the concave heatspreader situation with so many of Intel's CPUs.
It took me a while to figure out why my temps were so retarded, & while it's nice to know why, it's very sad that the only real fix is to lap your own CPU, which effectively kills any resale value, nevermind warranty :frown:

Well i am interested in this thread as well, i have dvd shrink /w nero and alchol 120%.
i will put my e6600 system together in the next couple of days but for now on my D805@4.0ghz it took me 48 minutes for just the encoding part of the movie CRASH on dvd shrink the burning part does not take long at all. I will get my d915 in on the action too. I am not sure if my setup is optimized just installed dvd shrink and used it.
