Core 2 build...

So most likely I will pull the trigger and start buying parts for a new build. I refuse to with the new socket 1156 and 1366 stuff for the time being. Still to expensive for my taste.

With that said I have 2 Q6600 cpus and 1 QX6700 cpu to build a computer with. I will use whichever one is left of the three after I've sold two on another forum. (they are engineering samples)

This is what my tentative build is:
-Either a Q6600 or QX6700 cpu
-XFX 750i mobo
-OCZ Reaper DDR2 800 RAM (most likely 2x2gb so i can add 2 more 2gb stick in the future if needed)
-Antec 300 case
Corsair 400-500W PSU
-XFX Video card of some sort, one to start, maybe a second in the future for SLI
-(2) 1-200GB HDD in RAID 1
-dual disc drives for cd burning. thinking of getting a blu-ray drive.
-Zalman cooler, not sure which one yet.

Main uses for computer. Pictures, music, videos, movies, blu-ray maybe, cd burning, itunes, heavy internet usage, guitar recording and editing.

Personally, I'd stick with the EE. It's got considerably more horsepower than the clock cycle would have you believe.

With that said, ES chips sometimes have a hard ceiling. I have an old Galatin, and the system wouldn't post above 3.59. Even CPU-Z specified that it's max was 3.6. Retail versions could easily hit 4.

This is assuming you want to overclock, seeing that you're considering a Zalman. In which case, you're considering the wrong mobo. Apparently has something to do with FSB holes and RAM dividers that make it a real bitch to overclock. Might not have any issue with a EE tho', since you'd just bump the multiplier.

775 coolers are starting to get scarce. There's a 9500 at the 'egg, and a couple more at SVC (7700 and 9700).

The people I've sold CPUs to so far have had no problem OCing. Some were getting 4.00G + on air cooling...stable.

with that said, I dont want to OC much. Maybe 3.4-3.6 on air cooling.

The Antec will be an air-tunnel when I'm done with it.

ah ok.

well does the build look okay though. saying I build in the next month or two, will it be good for the next 5 years? Good enough for the tasks I mentioned above?

I have a similar build and have no doubt that the configuration could do what you do 5 years from now. Obviously not as well as +5 years technology, whatever it may be. But since you didn't say gaming, I don't see why it couldn't handle that stuff decently.

technically, you are talking about 2 generations ago. only warning is that i've heard of q6600 ES that don't have speedstep enabled so you may want to check that. oc to 3.6ghz on air is no guarantee with q6600. you'll probably want a better cooler than zalman. try TRUE/tuniq tower/exposed heatpipe coolers.

1 gen, 2 gens whatever.

I'm quite sure oc to 3.4-3.6 on air would be possible. I will look into the coolers you suggested though. :)

Just a personal opinion based on your attitude.

what is my attitude? I'm not being unpleasant, just wish people would give me their opinions.

That's one about most computer people, they are overly sensitive and/or dont care about last gen or 2 gen ago stuff. whatever the newest stuff is, is all they care about.

Im not overly sensitive or do I care really care about the I5/I7 because its out of my price range right now. " therefore you will critique my build" was a pretty rude comment to make.

I'm just now realizing that they don't go unnoticed. I shall also wish you good luck.

lol, thank you. some real nice ppl on this forums. I wish I would have joined years ago. Good computer forums are hard to come by and are few and far between. Anandtech is a step above the rest...
