My old 900Mhz el-cheapo cordless phone died. And I'm looking for a replacement.

But i'm looking for a cordless that has security features that some Joe Smuck w/a scanner can't listen in on my call.

Do all 2.4Ghz give me that protection? Or just the ones that say DSS?

If so, is 2.4Ghz or 900Mhz DSS phones better? Which brands to avoid?

And of course, where to get it cheap? :D

First off, you must assume that any encryption can be broken. However, for most people, the encryption in most cordless phones is protection enough; it'll keep out the casual/opportunistic eavesdroppers who have radio scanners.

Spread spectrum and anything that uses digital signal transmission would stop those folks.

However, if I were motivated enough to listen in on your phone calls, I'd buy the same model phone you have, and open it up, find out what radio chips are in it, download the manufacturer's data sheets, and start reverse engineering. No telling how successful I'd be. (Read "Hacking the XBox" to understand just how much some of these hardware hackers really do understand what they're doing.)

But aren't all 900mhz and 2.4ghz phones digital? can analog waves travel at that frequency?
