He had some BB rewards GC's, there's a $50 rebate and he earned BB rewards by buying this ... after all the discounts it came out to $79 or so.

I haven't heard the answering machine in use but damn this is one awesome badass phone.
Yeah looks like it's got every needed feature. Wonder if the extra handsets would share phonebooks? Also I'd really like a new call indicator light (Motorola and one other brand...the new Unidens maybe, have this).
Please let us/me know how he likes the sound quality/reception of the phone and answering machine.

Yes more info on that please. And also which handset would be the one to get for the phone?

microwaves operate at 2.4 ghz. you're supposed to keep those phones away from them for that very reason.

Panasonic Cordless phones are the best, ask any person that sells phones. V-tec = cheap quality.

Funny, as I said, some people on here in the past couple years have said that Vtechs are good for the money, and many people have said that Panny's are not good. So who knows. Maybe things have changed since then.

got my mom that one too

we moved and now have 5 acres. The 900 mHz had just crap for range. Since I was thinking of setting up a wireless network i decided to get her the 5.8 gHz (instead of the 2.4 gHz) phone for christmas. The range is just nuts (the furthest i was able to from the base was about 200 yards--had to enable the booster fuction after about 400 ft). The thing is great because each handset acts like a speaker phone (at excellent quality). The only down side is the price I paid $200 for the base and a handset (in november), but its only $139 from newegg; but the phone is worth every penny.

here's the web site link

I still believe that 900 MHz Digital Spread Spectrum (DSS) is the best. The key here is the DSS. DSS phones eat the regular digital and cheap analog phones alive. (I think that DSS phones are allowed to transmit at a higher power level than analog and standard digital phones.) It's just too bad nobody seems to make 900 MHz DSS phones anymore. Whether you get a 2.4 or a 5.8 GHz cordless phone, make sure it's a DSS model, and you should be happy with its range.

no way, i have a 900 mhz phone still and the 2.4 ghz phones are MUCH better. it isn't JUST marketing, there is a difference in performance.

just how old was the 900mhz you compared?

fact is i doubt the difference justifies the cost most of the time. well..by now the arguement is between 2.4ghz vs 5ghz.. since i just bought 2 2.4ghz from frys a few days ago for 9 dollars -vtech and 13 dollars ge with answering machine. both sound as good as a phone can get, and by the time they die, there will be another hot deal..probably on 5.8ghz. and if they don't die, the cost of the replacement battery will be as much or more then a new sale priced phone. heck, the pos 900mhz phones im replacing for sh*ts and giggles aren't anywhere near dead yet either. unless you live on a ranch or a giant house, i don't see the utility of ultra long range transmission. and voice encryption? nothing i say is very interesting.;)

fact is those 60-200 dollar phones out there don't have much more utility over cheap phones that justify their price. just calculate the dollars per feature extra...well useful features atleast and its quite bad. just look at the high priced features. color screens? wtf? downloadable image for wallpaper? wtf? costly multiple hand sets? wtf? i can just buy a whole buncha phones for the price of one extra bloody handset. etc etc etc.

We don't have Fry's here, but as I mentioned Staples had a Vtech 2 handset 2.4ghz phone for $30 AMIR (again, says it's wireless network compatible).

LuNoTiCK, let us know how you like the sound quality of the phone and AM, and the reception. I wish it didnt use a NiCd though.

After using it I have to say the sound quality seems to be great. I haven't really went that far, but with the reception I'm able to go around the house to the second floor, without any loss.

I don't use answering machines, because I simply hate them. It does give you a choice of 3 mailboxes though.

I didn't read all the replies, but don't waste too much money on it. Remember, it's just a phone. You'll probably be fine with the cheapest 900mhz or 2.8GHz or whatever it is frequency. Get a seperate answering machine so it's not tied to a phone, saves money in the long run.

If you're ever out of a job or just need extra money for something, you'll wish you saved on things like this

Are there any phones that do not use NiCD batteries these days? Did some manufacturers go lithium-ion for their cordless phones as well?

I would say that you overpaid.

I saw an AWESOME Uniden 5.8GHz cordless phone with built in digital answering machine AND 3 additional headsets for $99 @ CostCo B&M.

Well if thats true than I overpaid, no question. O well, nothing I can do about it now. Besides everyone overpays compared to you. This is the cheapest I can find on Costco.

I don't know of any manufacturers who use Litium-Ion in their cordless phones, I know in cell phones they do, but not cordless. You forget, they do have such a thing as NiMH which is better than NiCD batteries.

I have the Panasonic 5.8 ghz. I had to buy one since the other 2.4ghz phone had problems working with my Packet8 phone service using a wireless router. The sound would be crappy and sometimes the person on the other end of the phone couldnt understand me.
I switched to the 5.8ghz phone and all my problems are gone. The phone is really amazing with a speakerphone built into the handset.
The range helps too. I'm pretty happy with it.

I got that Uniden set from Costco that is mentioned above. Its a great phone set. I have nothing really negative to say about it. Its a fairly new model, so keep that in mind if you search for reviews. Their previous 5.8ghz model had a lot of problems. This new one fixed them all. I left a positive review of it thats posted at Amazon.

Why would the 5.8Ghz signal interfere with wlan (802.11b/g) when the phone is placed near the laptop? Unless you were talking about 802.11a, I don't see how this is possible.

Thanks for the review.

I wasn't aware that Uniden had problems with earlier 5.8GHz models.

In my experience, I agree. My sprint 900mhz (I think it's a rebadged uniden) is the best phone I've used. I like it better than my uniden or my panasonic 2.4ghz phones. It's range is just as long too.
