cordless and optical mice?

Do optical mice work ok? and cordless mice? And stay working over a long time? My MS Intellimouse with cord and mousepad has worked perfectly since the day I bought it 3 years ago but I want an optical and also cordless mouse to save clutter. Are they ok for games?

Should be ok for games, might get a bit of lag once in a while. i.e. Playing FPS, want to turn right, move mouse, actual movement is just a hair behind.
