What's the deal with copyrighting? If you just say that something of yours is "copyrighted", does that count? Does that then make it illegal for others to use it? Or do you have to pay for some thing.. 😱 Just a little unclear on this, maybe you can enlighten me.

Thanks.

Your copyright begins the moment you put the pen to the paper. Of course, enforcement is a different story.
You can do a few things. The "po man's copyright" is to put a copy of your work in an envelope and send it to yourself by certified mail. Keep the sealed envelope with the work inside and theoretically were you to try and sue for an infringement, since that letter will have been postmarked the date you sent it, it at least establishes when you originally came up with the idea.

There are also varying types of registrations for your work like the "circle R" "Circle C" and "TM." I remember having a discussion about what each specifically signals in terms of exclusivity....each comes with different fees and terms.

i was just talking to a guy about this...you need to pay for something to be copyrighted...its cheap, like twenty bones, and it lasts 50 years...lol, RSI, hopefully GirlFriday doesn't sue you or something!😉

Hmm... what was the 3 keys that you could press to make the copyright symbol?

There is some form that you need to fill out, to describe the things to which you are claiming copyright ownership. I believe it must be notarized, but I'm not sure if it need be "filed" with any agency or something. If you just put "Copyright" at the bottom of something, that isn't enough.

Thank you, and thanks for all the replies, people. That's what I thought. My friend was telling me that I shouldn't post guitar tabs online without copyrighting them. He just wrote something about being copyrighted at the bottom of his web page, as if it made it special...? That's why I wanted clarification on this - if I actually did just write copyright at the bottom of my tabs, that wouldn't mean very much now would it!

Thanks again..

PS: GF... watcha gonna do? huh?😀

And isn't that perfectly acceptable in my sig? It's quoted and credit is given to GirlFriday for having said that. Let's say you have a book. Is it wrong to take a quote from it, "blahblahblah" - Blah Blah, 1999. ? Didn't think so!..

It is interesting that some give advice and make comments about things that they know nothing about.
A copyrite is automatic and it begins at the time the person sits down at the keyboard or puts the pen to the paper. GoHERE
Bleep

<< Yes it means that, and your sig is my statement copyrighted, now pay me mofo. >>

Actually, I think everything you express here is the creative copyright of Anandtech Inc, LLC, etc. 🙂

Copyright begins upon creation, but there is NO mechanism for enforcement and certainly no proof unless there is something documented and dated. Otherwise, I can copy your stuff, say I wrote it before you did, and if I've had mine notarized or 'certified' in some way, but you didn't, guess who would win in court? Talk about given useless advice!
