copying large amounts of data, how to ensure everything is correct?

is there any software to ensure things are exact copies? i've had issues before of copying large quantities of jpgs and the copy became corrupted. i don't want to clone the harddrives because i need to combine the data. any input appreciated. thanks

One thing I normally do is check the file size of both, and it should be exact to the byte.

Now if it's not, trying to find where the issue is may be much harder. Not aware of any software to check this at a more granular level but I'm sure there's some.

acronis true image can do exact image of files with or without compression and also verify, a trial can be downloaded.

Easiest tool for this is CDcheck: http://www.kvipu.com/CDCheck/

It says it's for checking DVD's and CD's, but it works with any two sources/folders. I use it to check my external hard drive backups.

Free to register for private use, but even if you don't register it, it carries on working 100% after 30 days.

Allows CRC check of all files copied and manual buffers set up that really does speed up checking (I'd recommend 32MB max).
