Copying entire hard drive contents to another hard drive

I recently got a larger hard drive to replace my current one, but it's for my laptop so it can only hold one hard drive at a time. I want to make a duplicate of my current drive and put it on my new drive. do i need a program to do that? or can i just copy and paste *.*? would the MBR and everything be copied too? all drive info and such? the old drive is a 160gb fujitsu and the new one is a 320gb WD.

thanks

You can't just copy paste while running the OS. You need to put it in a seperate computer and copy the drive.

yeah that's what I will do. would Partitionmagic 8.0 let me do this?

hmmm i can copy one partition at a time, but I can't copy the entire drive...

and there is also a hidden partition

Buy Norton Ghost.. it's like $40.. And then put it on a BartPE cd.. It'll be one of the most useful utilities ever.

oh, its easier.
i use clone zilla sometimes as well.
but i'm not going to claim its user friendly!

No, it's definitely not that :^D

For price, and ease of use, I think the drive manufacturers utilities are easiest. Seagate(if I remember right) uses a version of True Image. It takes up a lot of drive space, but it doesn't get much easier to use.

ok what if I do this?

1. make partitions on new drive
2. install windows in the primary partition
3. delete windows in primary partition
4. copy *.* from all partitions in the old drive to the partitions in the new drive
