Copy protection warning

So i got my copy of Prince of Persia 2 (<$8 shipped, thanks HD) and i notice on the back a warning:
"This game contains technology intended to prevent copying that may conflict with some CD-RW, DVD-RW and virtual drives."

WTF does this mean? Is it going to install some Starforce like drivers that might ****** up my DVD burner? a google search indicates that it uses Safedisc, of which i'm sure i've i've installed a game with before. But i've never noticed this warning before.

P.S. rant- copy protection is mofing pointless, easy to circumvent, and simply annoying to people who legitimately buy games.

I feel your pain. I still hate it when I put in a DVD I bought and get the stupid:

"YOU WOULDN'T STEAL A HANDBAG! YOU WOULDN'T STEAL A CAR! WHY WOULD YOU STEAL A MOVIE?!?!!"

This is usually followed by me screaming "I ****** BOUGHT THE MOVIE OTHERWISE I WOULDN'T HAVE TO SIT THROUGH THIS EVERYTIME I WANT TO WATCH IT" and throwing lots of ****** at the screen.

Thanks for letting me get that out

My feelings exactly! the MPAA and the RIAA need to die terrible deaths! Stealing a movie is much less than stealing a handbag or car, but yet the MPAA/RIAA is full of themselves!

Yeah, those anti-piracy messages don't work. The only reason you see the message is if you buy or rent the DVD, so you don't get the message to the people that are not doing that and just downloading the movies instead. The **AA have a severe case of head in ass syndrome.

Seriously, I have no problem paying $8 or so for a movie I am unsure about at walmart or something when it goes on the old release racks. If I liked a movie in theaters or I think I will like it I have no problem paying $15ish for it when it comes out(usually goes up after that).

well i'm sure their thinking with that crap is to seperate the actually criminals with the leechers. People who do steal and pirate won't see it or care, but they are hoping people who occasionally download crap will and stop their terrible theiving ways.
but frankly, in my eyes the RIAA especially lacks any moral ground to stand on when it comes to theiving.

They put that on there, because the game wont play with the original disc in some DVD-RW drives. I had this problem with GTA:SA. Called support, and they basically said tough luck, so I downloaded a no cd hack.

That would be highly illegal and they'd have a class action suit on their hands the second someone puts the CD in their PC.

Also, what's a DVD normally cost in the US? We pay ~?30 for a new release DVD over here, I just can't pay for it.

New releases cost anywhere between $14 and $30, where they are usually about $20.

?30? Ouch. We pay $15-$20 (?12-?16), for the most part.

The funny thing is, the regular users who would want to copy their media/games/whatever for legitimate purposes would probably have a hard time figuring out how. The ironic part is, only those who are doing it with other motives probably know how to bypass it.

Kind of backwards, IMO. Causing trouble for those who just want a backup.

Isn't the RIAA's stance on music CD's now that you don't even have the right to rip your own?

i hate having to put the disc in just to play the game. if i put in the right CD key (i hate those too, 25 characters of hard to read type and it is never located on the CD where it wouldn't get lost) i shouldn't have to put in the disc. having to find the disc keeps me from playing plenty of games. no-cd cracks ftw.

yup. week of release you can usually find at least one store selling a dvd for under $15. normal pricing tends between $18 and $20, with plenty of sales.

that is for 'big box' type retailers such as best buy, circuit city, walmart, target, etc. music and dvd specialty stores in malls are likely to charge MSRP, which is usually $30.

probably, but who cares? RIAA has pretty much lost all credibility by being so damned obtuse and whiney.
CD is a horrible format for music. They are easily scratched and heavily used (you have to handle it everytime you listen to it). I really wish that those enclosed early CD cartridges and drives had caught on, damn near impossible to muck up the media.
