surprised the letters SUV weren't in your OP. Even more surprised the words "soccer mom" didn't appear either.

And no, they shouldn't.

Yes, they should.

And I could add suv and soccer mom if you like. :p

If the phone wasn't there or if it didn't work she wouldn't be trying to text or update her facebook or send an e-mail or whatever the fuck inane thing she was doing when she should have been paying attention to the road. You just don't see people this distracted by anything else in a car...except maybe screaming kids but good luck outlawing them. :p

The phone is irrelevant. The action of the person using it is the only thing that is relevant. What if someone can use a phone in such a manner that it is no more distraction to them than changing the station on a radio, using a GPS or talking with someone else who is in the car? Should these other things then be outlawed?

Maybe we should just stop making it legal to drive in a school zone. Let's cordon off the schools and make it so only buses can get in. That will save the children!

School zones are stupid in some ways. There is one here which the light blinks for DURING RECESS. All the kids are BEHIND A FUCKING FENCE. And this is an elementary school. None of the kids are even allowed to leave campus during the school day unless someone comes to get them, etc. But during recess, the traffic on a main road is slowed to 20MPH for NO REASON.

Yeah, and I'm saying we need to cite people for the action of using a cell phone while driving.

It's already illegal, we just need cops to enforce it.

BTW-It has been proven that you cannot text while driving without it impairing your ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. There is no debating this. It is a fact. Everyone knows this.

Know what would make the roads safer? Stop passing every idiot who comes through. Seriously, there are so many fucking retarded people who have never learned how to drive properly driving on the roads. Honestly driving is the worst part about California.

Fuck all you commies who are saying to disable the phone while in the car/moving/whatever. My phone is for playing music while driving, if I get an incoming call I can answer it without taking my eyes off the road, and it works like a hands-free, call audio goes through the car stereo. With my windows up, you don't know if I'm talking or singing along with the music.

So, in conclusion, go to hell Jules, Holden, and rudeguy.

It's not illegal, so why should we cite anyone for using a cell phone while driving? They should be cited for driving while distracted. The act of using a cell phone does not necessarily mean that someone is distracted.

My phone can send text messages through just speech so I just have to talk and it will send a text message - does that mean that I'm distracted because I'm sending a text message or using my phone? How is that any different than talking to someone in the passenger seat?

Actually, you're wrong, it is illegal.

CA.DMV.GOV

The new Wireless Communications Device Law (effective January 1, 2009) makes it an infraction to write, send, or read text-based communication on an electronic wireless communications device, such as a cell phone, while driving a motor vehicle.

Two additional laws dealing with the use of wireless telephones while driving went into effect July 1, 2008. The first law prohibits all drivers from using a handheld wireless telephone while operating a motor vehicle, (California Vehicle Code [VC] §23123). Motorists 18 and over may use a “hands-free device. The second law effective July 1, 2008, prohibits drivers under the age of 18 from using a wireless telephone or hands-free device while operating a motor vehicle (VC §23124).

They should make cars that are in "D" have a built in cell phone blocker that only deactivates when the car is in "N" or "P" or when using hands free BT or something.
But using a cell while driving can be very dangerous....i see no reason why cells can't text using natural language and speaking into it instead, its no perfect but solutions are out there.

That's just the California DMV. Where's the federal law? So no, it is NOT illegal.

This. I don't mind the talking so much anymore but if you are texting while driving, fuck you. Some stupid, snot nosed kid was behind me today at a light and texting the entire time. I watched him inch up on me from about 5 feet to nearly 6 inches when he finally looked up and hit the brakes hard. Then the stupid bastard changed lanes in the intersection (while still texting) and pulled in front of me with slowing traffic (he had to brake hard again because he pulled behind a much slower moving car).

If you need to text, get the fuck off the road.

Many states have laws against cell phone use while driving...or at least texting, which you should really be dragged out of the car and shot for doing IMO.

I don't know why, given our fiscal state, we don't hand tickets out for this like candy.
We need to tax the shit out of dumb and this entitlement attitude our society has. Oh I don't need to obey these "inconvent" laws, I'm too important.

Fuck you, I bought a Bluetooth hands free to comply, why shouldn't everyone else? $500 for each infraction. Can't afford it? Ride a bike, bus it or car pool.

No, I don't.

Where's your snappy response now, motherfucker? :colbert:

Calm down there Colbert. And, if there is a hell, I'll probably end up there despite the fact that I'm a good person simply because I don't believe in god.

Look, while I'm not happy with people using hands free devices I'm "okay" with allowing them until proven that they are a severe distraction...which I'm not sure they are. But dialing phone numbers, web surfing, updating your facebook page, reading and sending e-mails, and texting is as almost as dangerous as being drunk. Everyone knows this!!!

FTR-I'm fine with you changing the station on the radio or taking a sip of coffee or even talking to your passengers, as long as you pay attention to the road while doing so. I draw the line at reading books, applying makeup, and shaving...and, of course, the aforementioned cell phone use though. :colbert:

If that wasn't snappy enough for you, then YOU GO TO HELL!!! :p

They need to disable phones if vehicle is in motion like my GPS, although I overrode it:p

Seriously Cell phoning is no different than DUI. You're mentally distracted, and often times don't have full control with only one hand. Everyone knows this don't try and deny you have same focus off cell and hands @ 10 and 2.

My son can text w/o even looking, hand at waist level, whole love convos back and forth to his GF it's really amazing. I'd end up in a tree.

When he starts driving in a couple years we are going to have a serious talk.

Well, I don't use a hands-free device, it just happens to work that way. Phone automagically routes call audio through the headphone jack and pumps up the gain on the mic when plugged in.

Answering the call doesn't take anymore effort than changing the radio station (probably less because I don't have to look down as far) or skipping to another song (lock screen widget).

I don't txt, dial out, email, or facebook while driving. When stopped at a light, I might fiddle with it, but as soon as the light changes, I stop paying attention to the phone.

And yeah, if there's a hell, I'll be joining you in it.

most modern phones have gps. It will take one family of a loved one to sue or maybe some kind of class action if you're moving faster than a walking person the gps in the phone should deactivate the phone for talking and outgoing texts.

Brillant. Then when there are instances of road rage and you're getting chased around, like I and a friend was, and trying to use the phone to call 911, you can't. Great idea

Leave my phone alone. I make it a point NOT to text while driving, and to keep any phone conversations short (almost never make a call, and only answer important incoming calls) but we don't need Big Brother getting bigger and controlling more.
