The four District of Columbia police officers reportedly caught on tape stealing from Toys for Tots ?tarnished? the department?s image, a police official said.

Police confirmed that the four officers had been put on desk jobs as internal affairs investigates them for stealing toys. Officials said if the officers did take the toys intended for the city?s youth, they will be prosecuted.

On Christmas Day, the department?s community outreach director, Yvonne Smith, fired off a message to an e-mail network for residents of the Southeast D.C. neighborhood where the thefts allegedly occurred.

Smith wrote that she?d hoped to see Christmastime news coverage include positive stories about police outreach in one of the city?s poorest, most crime-plagued neighborhoods ? the 6th District in Southeast Washington ? instead of a tale about the strong victimizing the weak.

The story of the four officers accused of taking the toys ?starts off Christmas on a sour note, puts distance between the community and the police, and worst of all, tarnishes the image of the Department during a time when we are trying to build strong relationships to foster trust that ultimately helps us solve crimes,? Smith wrote.

As police officials released few details on the investigation on Christmas Eve, police cadets were unloading a van stuffed with toys at Sursum Corda and Potomac Gardens Public Housing Developments, Smith wrote.

?People of all ages ran out and surrounded them, taking toys and saying, ?the police have never done anything like this here,? ? she wrote, highlighting how police outreach can benefit relations with the community.

?Please don?t let the Christmas story of the day be about an investigation of officers who make up .001 percent of the department,? Smith concluded. ?Many many many more members made outstanding contributions during this holiday season to make a difference in the lives of families who are struggling.?

Two of the accused officers worked for the department?s youth services division, and the four were caught on tape taking the toys, WJLA reported.

Wow, that's messed up, cops stealing toys... like they even need toys? Pretty douchebag thing to do, on Christmas Eve no less. I like Yvonne Smith's response is an essential "Don't focus on them! Just focus on the good things guys! Come on, please?!!"

How about putting these assholes in jail? I hate the whole cop mentality of covering and protecting their own. Fucking corrupt douchebags. .001%? More like 70% IMO, and I know many cops.

They're still just accused at this point. Desk duty until indictment, then suspension until trial or plea. Let's just hope IAB and the community keep on top of this so it doesn't end up whitewashed.

Hate to say it, but agree 100%.

"the four were caught on tape taking the toys, WJLA reported."

Not much doubt really. Should have kicked them to the curb immediately. If I was caught on tape stealing from some place, I can fucking guarantee you I wouldn't be given a paid desk job, I'd be given a swift kick out the door, conviction or no conviction.

So what, some more USA antisocial nuts were caught doing outrageous acts. In this case the nuts were cops, not the first or the last time that will happen.

Is it a blanket prima facia case that all cops are corrupt, I for one do not think so.

But gotta agree with dmcowen674, eternal vigilance, when we have corrupt cops, we must make sure they do not go unpunished.

I got this off of the DC police website:

Police Officer Salary
The starting salary for police officers is $48,715 a year, effective October 14, 2007. After 18 months of service, most police officers can expect to earn a base salary of approximately $53,300 a year. Recruits begin earning their full salary upon entering the Academy.

Lateral officers' starting salary range from $51,151 to a maximum of $71,971, effective October 14, 2007, and is dependent on their experience.

Now that is what really makes this a disgrace. Add in some shift differential, holiday pay, uniform allowance, and a bunch of overtime (usually unavoidable in the police field) and you have a pretty damn good salary and great benefits for a single guy.

These cops are pathetic and bring shame on all cops. I hope they are fired as their integrity is definitely compromised.

Your math was closer than Yvonne Smith's; You're only off by one order of magnitude.

4 out of 4000 = 0.1% (actually 4050 sworn officers per Wiki)

0.001% = 4 out of 400,000.

The problem isn't the 4 cops it is the 4050 who look the other way when the 4 break the law. If it was anybody else they would have been sitting in jail waiting for the their bail hearing.

So it's OK to steal if you're broke?

These guys give cops a bad name and do a disservice to all charities. It's stories like this and others where 'operating costs' are found to be exorbitant that make me wary of handing out money. When I see people with shirts on at intersections for 'this or that' charity I always wonder where the money is going.
