so today i was driving thru this town which is notorious for handing out traffic tickets. its a small town and most of the roads have a 25 mph speed limit. the cops would give you a ticket if you go even 5mph over the limit. so anyways...today they had one of those radar displays set up which tells the oncoming traffic how fast each car is going. i was driving at 25, but the display said 20. i know it was my speed the board was showing cuz there were no other cars in front of, or behind me. so i drive up about half a mile, still going at 25 according to my speedometer, and i see 3 cop cars just waiting around to hand out tickets. this is mad shady!! now i dunno if the display is messed up or if they are showing a lower speed on purpose just so some motorist would think that their speedometer is broken and speed up 5mph, and thus get a ticket.....but if they are doing this on purpose....WOW...just WOW!!

edit...come to think about it, i think they are doing this on purpose! those displays are usually used to remind motorists to slow down....so if its just a healty reminder, there is no need for 3 cop cars to be lurking around to hand out tickets

Maybe there are calibration issues with their display and then your car not properly telling you your correct speed? Leading to a combined f-up of 5mph. I know its a stretch, but it is a possibility.

Maybe your speedo is off? 5mph is a lot at that speed to be off by, but even my gf's camry is off by 5mph @ 35mph

i thought that too...but my car is pretty new with stock rims and tires (no speed offset from using larger aftermarket wheels)...so i doubt its my car

Well then all I can say is maybe file a complaint or something with the department? And let people in the community be aware of this.

you never know! I never thought a 96 camry with stock wheels and tires could be that far off, but lo and behold....

yea, there is normally a difference between your speedo, and your actual speed. some vary between 2-5 mph. i know my dads, and mine are 3 mphs difference.

so its not them trying to screw you, but rather your speedometer trying to keep you from getting a ticket.

Get over it, I've seen worse. Just take it easy and you'll never have a problem with speeding tickets. Hell you can usually get away with speeding quite a bit even in front of cops unless they have a radar set up or you drive a sports car / obnoxious ricemobile. Drive a bland, boring 4-door family sedan or an old sh1tbox and you can usually fly right by a cop and they don't even notice or care. :p

Not that I condone speeding... ;)

I think your car speedo is off. The display is to let you know what your real speed is.

ok...i'll say my speedo is off. but my question is, when the cop shoots me with his laser, is he gonna see the same speed the display was showing me? cuz thats really what matters...what the cop sees on his radar gun

Seriously, though, if you think the radar sign is misleading that the police are baiting drivers into a speed trap, call the local TV news stations. Many local stations have an "On your side"-type investigative reporting team. This is the kind of story news stations will eat up because it's a sure bet to draw lots of viewers when they air their findings.
